Can square Retail POS identify only the SKU in a Variable Barcode?

I use Variable UPC-A Barcodes for my variable weight items in my shop. It works great at checkout in the square pos app, but when I try to inventory those items using the barcode it sees there isn’t an item with that barcode because technically there isn’t.

So my question. Is there a way to tell square to only read the SKU portion of the barcode when I am taking inventory or do I have to do it manually without a scanner?

Do you make your own barcodes?   If you do try making a barcode of just the SKU, to enter the inventory.  Leave this barcode where you enter the inventory, then you can still use the variable barcodes as normal on your items.   I am not sure if that will work but it is a quick test you could do and be able to use your scanner to input your inventory.

@WBDairyFarmLLC Just to make sure we're on the same page. You want to just be able to scan the SKU barcode of the Variable UPC barcode to pull up the item for inventory purposes?

There is a work around and hopefully it will work for you.

Go into your Square item settings.

Set the SKU to something short and scannable — like 25272

Then scan or enter that code when doing inventory.

barcode 7 25272 73070 6

your UPC-A barcode

Same barcode but in Code 128

1. Log in to your Square Dashboard
Go to: squareup.com/dashboard

2. Navigate to Items
Click "Items" from the sidebar

Then click  "Item Library"

3. Select or Create an Item
Click on an existing product, or create a new one

4. Scroll to Variations
You’ll see each variation (like size, color, etc.)

Click on the variation name (ex: “Default” or “Small / Red”)

5. Enter Your Short Code in the SKU Field
In the variation details, you’ll see:

SKU → Enter your short code here (e.g., 25272)

Custom Barcode → leave blank unless you want to use a full UPC or other code

6. Save Changes

How It Works
When you scan a barcode that contains just the SKU (e.g., 25272), Square will match it to that item.

💡 Important:
Your barcode scanner must be set to transmit just the SKU digits (no added characters like tabs or enters) for this to work smoothly.

Hopefully this will solve your problem.

@WBDairyFarmLLC

For your Item you sell by Weight lets call it Widgets:

When You create or Edit Widgets give it a 5 digit SKU - 25272 like @rtfulk  shows in the above.

Then when your scale prints out a Barcode it should be something similar to :

2 25272 00799 ?

2- Identifies its a Price Embedded Barcode

25272 - is the SKU of the Item

00799 - shows that the total Price would be 7.99

? - is a check digit created by your Label maker.

So When you receive more widgets Scan a Barcode of 25272 which Should pull up the Item Widgets, enter the Lb quantity your receiving.

Here is another Explanation of the UPC-A barcodes in this thread :

Price-embedded-barcode-setup/td-p/776920  where I also posted images of the receipt after testing a Price embedded barcode.  My images in post 9 of 13 in this link shows me searching for item by just the SKU of 00146, where I could click the Blue Manage Stock to enter new stock levels.

hope this all helps.
