Automatic variation on checkout

Hi,

 

when checking out, and selecting the items, I used to be able to select “soap,” and then choose the variation of “amethyst crystal” or “queen bee” or whatever, and as they are all different prices it is helpful. Now the first variation comes up automatically (in this case amethyst crystal” since it’s first alphabetically), and I have to tap the name of the soap to see the other variations. It’s not at all intuitive, and when the cashiers are in a hurry many mistakes are made. 

it seems like this just changed. Is there a way to go back to the variations not being set automatically when choosing an item?

Hi @trendie.  Since I don’t use the standard Square POS anymore, I downloaded it and brought up one of my items.  I was able to confirm that the standard POS does indeed default to the first variation, which is very wrong and hopefully just a bug.  I was also able to confirm that this behavior is NOT happening on either the Retail or Restaurant POS.  Which only confirms my suspicion that this is a bug.  So I’m going to tag a few Square moderators here to have them check with the engineers.  @_Violet @JJ_ @MayaP @RobynR @Summer2024 this DEFINITELY seems like a bug with the potential to cause issues for tons of sellers!!

Thanks. I am using the retail POS (the sort of teal green one, not the white one). That’s where I’m having this issue.

Ah.  I assumed you were using the “white” one since that was the board you posted in.  My apologies.  Now, that’s odd.  I tested the Retail “teal green” one and I’m NOT seeing the behavior you are describing.  Can you upload a video showing this?  I just made sure I was fully updated and it is NOT giving me a default variation.  See my video below (after it loads, which can take a while).

Honestly I don’t even know what board I’m posting in - another aspect of this system that I find confusing. I took a video, but I don’t know how to attach it.

To attach a video (from a desktop or tablet) click on the circled button in the menu bar at the top of your reply.  You MUST do this from a tablet or desktop computer.  There is no way to attach a video from a phone with it’s limited screen size.

Thank you for that video.  As predicted, I was able to find what I think is the culprit, though it’s pretty obscure and took a while!  But, I learned something today! Ha.  Anyway…..

 

There is only one scenario that will cause a variation (the first one) to automatically be selected and added to the cart.  If you edit this item and scroll down to the “Checkout Behavior” screen, you’ll see a toggle to “skip item details screen.”  I’m betting this is toggled on, which it should not be for many/most sellers.  Unfortunately, I can’t answer how it got toggled on if you don’t remember doing it.  But if you toggle it off, you should be good to go.

Hi thank you so much for checking into all of this. I actually went and looked finally on the computer, and.... it didn't solve the issue. That switch is not toggled on. In fact, I toggled it on, saved it, then toggled it off again and saved it.  It still does the same exact same thing. 

 

What's funny is, after an update in the fall sometime, it did this same thing, and then it got corrected. Now it just started doing it again over the past week. It's really frustrating! And like I said, very time consuming when you have a line of customers. 

 

I think this might finally be the cue for me to look elsewhere for a POS!

When I tested this on my iPhone with my Retail app I did not experience what you did in your video. I would like to gather some more details to better assist.

1) What version is your iPad and app on? Is it asking you to update? 

2) Have you tried deleting and reinstalling the app?

I am Running Square for Retail 6.41.3 on a 7th gen Ipad with the latest Ipad update.

I have a Favorites Category Inscense Items, we sell Incense Sticks and different holders so they are in that Favorites Folder.

 

So I tap Favorites - Incense Items - Incense 100 pk Sticks - 100 pk Sticks and then I am able to see exactly what @trendie is saying.  Doing it your way, if I select Bahamia Mama from the Folder Incense 100 pk Sticks instead of selecting 100 pk Sticks I see what you are saying since Bahama Mama is a Variation.  Now when I make a New variation and forget to add it to the Group of 100 pk Sticks and press 100 pk sticks is when it automatically chooses variation Air.  this is my first variation in the 100 ph of sticks.  If I tape "Air" then I see all variations.

 

I just tried this on 6.40.3 before posting here but here is a link I missread about modifers and I posted about Variations.  There are Screen shots of an older thread dealing with this same issue I believe.

The issue is that instead of Select which is not a modifer, the retail team has chosen an arbitrary variation (ie the first one in the list).  Before last year the Select was there now it is your first variation.  

 

Hope this all helps, and I did check @TheRealChipA settings and mine is also toggeled to the Grey or off position for my items parent of the Variations in question.  I have about 167 variations  under the parent of 100 Pk Sticks.

This exact same issue is happening for my company too. None of the affected items have Checkout Behavior toggled on, but it will never allow me to select a variation at checkout. I hope this bug gets resolved quickly!

Hi there any update? This new design is terrible. When you add an item to your grid, it shouldn’t then auto add all the options into the next grid screen. Being back the ability to choose the options from that nice pop up menu you all made
