can i transfer my item library to a menu? i need subcategories as weve now moved into retail

i started using square for our coffee shop where i uploaded 'items'. we now have a retail side of the business. i need sub categories as there is just FAR TOO MANY different types of things we now sell. 2 questions - ive been told it is possible if you create a menu instead of items - 1. can i transfer my ITEMS to a MENU? 2. how will this affect the square terminal - what will show up? as it will take me about 3 weeks to upload all the retail products while the coffee shop is still operating..

im lost on what to do - only solution i feel is to shut down the retail side and focus on selling via my website. problem is, the retail side since started selling is actually making more than the coffee shop does now. but because i cant load the products on there - staff have to put sales through as 'custom amounts' - which is an absolute headache for me as i have zero idea on what is being sold and cant reorder properly. Note: i live in a completely different country to where the coffee shop/retail shop is, im overseas in a warehouse. its just been an aboslute nightmare...

thanks in advance

Hi @Andy6 👋 Thank you for your post.

Can you clarify what you mean by "ive been told it is possible if you create a menu instead of items"? Was this something you heard here on the community, or was it through the support channels?

Do you currently sell physical items through a retail shop? I'm not quite understanding what you mean by "shut down the retail side". Is creating subcategories the only blocker for not uploading items to the "retail shop"?

It may also help if you post a link to your website so we can get a better understanding of how your current system is set up.

Apologies for all the questions! I just want to make sure we are all on the same page, and understand what you are trying to accomplish. 😊
