What are the best Square tools for a restaurant doing takeaway and dine-in orders?

The title of this thread has been edited from the original: Mainly takeaway shop.

Our business is about 80% takeaway and 20% dine-in.
Do you have any recommended setup for this type of operation?

Also, we’d like to provide order numbers to our customers. What’s the best way to do that?

If you’re accepting both takeaway and dine-in orders, Square Online and Square for Restaurants would be a great fit for your restaurant. Here’s what I’d recommend using Square’s tools:


Square Online for Takeaway

Set up your online ordering page so customers can place pickup and/or delivery orders anytime:



QR-Code Ordering for Dine-In (Optional)

You can create a dine-in menu that guests can order from on their phones. Square will generate unique QR codes you can place on each table:

Square for Restaurants POS

Use Square for Restaurants to manage both takeaway and dine-in orders in one place. Create Dining Options to suit your setup (e.g., Pickup and Dine-in) so orders are automatically routed and reported correctly:

Order Manager & Order Ticket Printing

Set up alerts and printing settings on your POS with Square Order Manager so every order gets a ticket sent to the right printer:

You can enable and configure your order settings to choose how order tickets are numbered or labelled:

  • Auto-assign ticket numbers (e.g. #001, #002, #003, etc)
  • Enter a custom number or name at the time you fire the order (e.g. “Smith” or “Table 5”)

Make sure your kitchen printer is set up to receive those tickets:

Finally, enable order ticket stubs to provide a printed ticket to your customer (that includes their order number) after the initial in-person order ticket prints out:
