Turn off Auto Generate SKU when duplicating an item

Since the recent update, when we duplicate an item (our preferred way to add similar items without having to re-enter categories and all the other info) a SKU is automatically generated in the SKU field.

We do not want that to happen, we have a system in place for our SKUs.  Previously, it would generate with the same SKU as the original, and a warning would immediately pop up, prompting us to scroll down to the field and change as needed.  With this auto population, there's obviously no error flag, so this can get missed and cause issues with random SKUs saved that won't match our process.  And the SKU field is just far enough down the screen that it's not visible from the top, where we're changing most of the other information for the new item

We have gone to settings, Auto generate SKUs is turned off.  We tried turning if on, then back off.  It does NOT generate a SKU on a totally new item creation, but as stated above, we don't want to have to enter in all the other info from scratch.  We use duplicate item almost exclusively to add items to existing categories.... Is there a way to turn this off for duplicate items, or will it be turned back off in upcoming updates.  Extremely frustrated that with just about every update/change our day-to-day seems to get more complicated 😞

Hi there, @Meekomac - Thanks for reaching out to us here in the Square Community.

I'm not sure of the answer to this one myself, so I'm going to consult with the Square for Retail team on this one to get the best answer for you.

I'll reach back out to you here once I gather more info!

Adding this in - we cannot turn off stock tracking for an item??  We have some things that we buy by the yard, sell by the sq inch - we don't track the stock, per se, as the system never kept it right due to waste, etc.  Now new items and any edited items in those categories are showing qty zero, even if the stock tracking is changed to "Available" instead of ."By Count"...

Hi Meekomac, I'm on the engineering team at Square. Thanks for letting us know about the bug with the SKUs and apologies for the complication it introduced. We have a fix in progress that we expect to be able to release in a little over a week. At that point duplication will correctly follow the auto-generation setting, so if it's turned off, you won't see random SKUs added.

One slight change versus the old version of the item sheet is that once we release the fix, when auto generation is off we will clear out the SKU field on the duplicated item rather than keeping the old one. This avoids it immediately prompting a warning.

(I also saw your follow-up about stock tracking--looking into that for you too.)
