Print order items as per category

Hello everyone,

Currently, Square Restaurant app can configure printer to print "Single item per ticket". Can I request for a feature to "Print orders by category as per ticket".

For example, I have an order  2 Cappuccino and 1 Latte in Coffee category, 1 Egg Benedict in Food category, and 1 Waffle in Dessert category. Can we have an option in Square Settings to let the printer print 3 tickets (instead of printing "Single item per ticket"):
- 1 ticket for all coffee.
- 1 ticket for food.
- 1 ticket for dessert

The reason is because our shop is not big enough to have multiple printers. So we really want to be able to print orders as per category (section).

Hi @daisy_sweetie! Thanks for reaching out.

You’re able to create separate Printer Profiles, each with different categories assigned, that will all print to the same printer.

Here's how:

Step 1: Create and Assign your Categories

If you haven't already, follow these steps to create three separate categories for CoffeeFood, and Dessert:

  1. Log in to your Square Dashboard and navigate to Items & Orders > Items > Categories.
  2. Click Create Category.
  3. Enter a Category Name (e.g., Coffee) and optionally add a category image.
  4. Click Add Items to assign items to your category. Ensure all Coffee items are assigned to the Coffee category. Click Done.
  5. Configure any additional settings, then click Save.

Repeat these steps for the Food and Dessert categories.

Step 2: Create Printer Profiles

Next, create three separate Printer Profiles for Coffee, Food, and Dessert on your Square for Restaurants POS:

  1. On your Square for Restaurants POS, tap More > Settings > Hardware > Printers > Profiles.
  2. Tap Create Profile.
  3. Give the profile a descriptive name (e.g., Coffee Profile).
  4. Tap In-Person Order Tickets and toggle it on.
  5. Tap Categories to Print and select the Coffee category.
  6. If you are selling items online, tap Online Order Tickets, toggle it on, and assign the Coffee category under Categories to Print.
  7. Tap Save.

Repeat these steps to create the Food and Dessert Printer Profiles.

Step 3: Assign Printer Profiles to your Printer

Finally, assign each Printer Profile to the same printer on your POS device. This step must be done from each point-of-sale device that will be taking orders.

  1. On the POS device, go to Settings > Hardware > Printers. A list of all connected printers will be displayed. Determine the printer you would like to print to.
    • If you are unsure how to identify your printer, the auto-generated names include the last few digits of the MAC address for network printers.
    • You can tap a printer in the list and tap Test Print. This will send a test receipt to the printer, and you can confirm if it is the intended printer.
  2. On the printer detail page, under Printer Profile, tap Assign.
  3. Select the printer profile configured for this prep station’s categories (e.g., Coffee Profile).
    • Be careful that no profiles are configured for the same exact settings, or you will get duplicate prints.
  4. Tap Save.

Be sure to repeat these steps on every device that will be firing orders to the kitchen.

After completing these steps, each Printer Profile will be connected to the same printer, and your Food, Coffee, and Dessert categories will print on separate tickets as needed.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions. 😊
