Is there a way for customers not be charged tax in certain states when they check out an item?
For an example, I live in MN and we do not charge tax on clothing, but other states do.
If someone in MN buys a clothing item from my store, they should not be charged taxes, but if someone from a different state buys a clothing item from my store, they will be charged clothing tax.
How do I go about this? How do i fix this on my online store? Because it is still charging tax on clothing? Do I remove the tax from the item?
THANK YOU!
There aren’t granular controls at the item level for online store taxes just yet, though this would be very helpful. While you can make items tax exempt, this would apply to all orders including those out of state.
However, if all of your items that you sell in-state do not require tax then you can disable taxes for Minnesota shipments. To do this:
1. Go to your online store dashboard.
2. Select “Settings” (at the bottom of the menu)
3. Select “Taxes” (again, at the bottom of the menu)
4. Select the “Edit” button next to the United States tax.
5. Uncheck the box for automatic calculation.
6. Enter the tax rate you need to charge, then select all states except MN. This will exempt MN orders from taxes.
