Hello, Im looking to start using the kitchen display for our business.
I know I will need a tablet to use this function and subscribe.
My question is how do the tickets get to the kitchen display? Does this work through the restaurants app only on my square stand?
Can I use my square terminals?
As all staff have a phone, can they use this to put orders in with the square POS app?
To help clear up, we own a square stand with he tablet, and a few square terminals.
Thanks for the help.
Thank you for your reply @YeOldeCrown.
Yes, that could be something that would work for sure!
All orders from Square for Restaurants and Point of Sale will appear on the KDS. Your KDS can receive orders from Square for Restaurants on iPads, Point of Sale on iPads, Android devices and Square Terminal, Square Online orders, any third-party delivery partner sending orders, or any third-party kiosk partner sending orders to Square.
In addition to this, order tickets sent to the KDS can also be printed from the Point of Sale in case you need a physical copy.
Check out this article on Getting Started with the Square KDS.
Hope this helps!
Hello @YeOldeCrown, welcome to the Seller Community 🙂
That sounds great.
My first note is that Square KDS runs on iPads using iOS 13 or higher, so please double-check check your iPad can support KDS before making any purchases!
Square KDS is available through the Square for Restaurants Plus subscription or as a standalone subscription. If you get the standalone subscription, you can use it with your standard Point of Sale app or the Square for Restaurants free app. so it's really a case of you taking a look at the features each app/subscription offers, and deciding which works best for your business.
You can compare Square for Restaurants (free vs plus) and Square Point of Sale pricing here.
Once you connect your KDS app to your Point of Sale app, (via device code), orders are synced with a direct link between the two. KDS pricing is £15/mo per KDS device - so if you wanted each team member to be putting orders through on their own devices, you may want to look at a Square for Restaurants Plus subscription, which covers Unlimited KDS devices.
You'll be able to customise ticket layouts, timers and notifications, and so on.
Additionally, yes your Square Terminals will work with Square KDS.
You would add a KDS with a device code and a Terminal with a device code they should both then be on the same system. If you then enable open tickets, your orders from the Terminal would send through to the KDS system.
I know it's a lot to try to envision, so I'll leave this video guide here. It is a US-based video so some of the terms may be a little off, but the functionality is the same.
And here is a helpful support article you can take a look at.

Thank you so much this is amazing,
One last question, I have subscribed and am now in the trial of the square restaurant plus, How do i connect the phones off staff to be able to see the tables and menus with their own accounts etc, I have looked around in the dashboard part through the device settings but using the device code does not work and says 'This device code can only be used in the Square for Restaurants Mobile App on Square Terminal or the mobile POS kit'
Apologies for any confusion, Square for Restaurants is currently only compatible with iPads running iOS 12 or higher and Square Register.
If you want your team to be taking orders on their mobile phones (rather than Square Terminals) then you would be looking at using the general Point of Sale app, with Open Tickets and the standalone KDS subscription!
Hey @YeOldeCrown - I notice you're in the beta community too, if you have a dig about over on that side there might be some interesting info now or coming soon.
The beta community is a fantastic way to find out about things that are.... well, in beta - so the NDA mean some things are discussed there that aren't on the main boards 👍🏻
Oh OK i understand,
The only issue i see with this is that on any mobile devices the predefined tickets do not show up and only a new custom one must be created, which then does not show them on the floor plan, is there a work around for this?
Hey @YeOldeCrown, just stepping in for Alegra here. I'm looking into your query, but just looking for some additional information from you.
Are you looking to create tickets within the Square POS app and then have them appear in the KDS? What exactly are you envisaging in this situation? The more information I can gather the better equipped I will be to answer your question.
Hello,
Sorry about that
So we in our pub want to be able to take orders with our personal phones in the square POS app. The orders should be added to the Tab and sent to the kitchen. is this something that will work or is a limitation where orders can only be sent to the kitchen display using the square restaurants app either on the Terminal or iPad app?
I Know you can amend and add items to Tabs/tickets all ready on the mobile app on our personal phones, but will the mobile app send the newly ordered items be sent to the kitchen?
Thank you for your reply @YeOldeCrown.
