We bought the Square Register to be used in our grocery store. We also purchased the Hobart HTi scales for the bakery and butchery.
We've tried everything possible to make the scale print a barcode label that is readable by Square. And still not working... We have reached a point where Square reads the barcode and correctly identify the product, but does not read the price.
Any ideas? I'm sure the issue is the string to generate the barcode.
If we use the label type 11, printing the UPC-A code, it return "Item no found" when scanned. If we use the label 180, printing the EAN13, only reads the product code, but not the price.
UPC-A code: 201009909497
where 10099 is the product code, 0949 is the price ($9.49) and 9 is the verification code.
EAN13: 0210099009499
where 02 is the prefix, 10099 is the product code 00949 is the price ($9.49), and 9 is the verification code.
Any idea? What am I doing wrong? Please!!!! We need to open the store next week and I have no clue how to make it work...
Hey there @Mercado_Ideal.
The UPC-A code only have 4 digits for price, and the requirement is for 5 digits. So instead of 0949 it should be 00949. Of course, that might also change the check digit. The invalid formatting most likely is what is causing the “item not found” error.
I see nothing wrong with the EAN-13 barcode, but hopefully the change to the UPC-A code will mean you don’t need it.
Let me know how that goes. Also, here are links to various Square barcode help documents.
I was having issues making a Price embedded Bacode, but a week or so ago I got it to work using the UPC-A format font.
You hace 20 as defining its a Price embedded bacode not 2.
Try 2 to show Price
10099 for the Product
00949 to show $9.49 dollar amount
and then have your Barcode generator make the check digit 7 in my example below
so your UPC-A barcode would be:
210099009497 11 digits where your UPC-A is 12 digits
I'm the founder of a small software company called Filljoy focused on POS-integrated weighing software and labeling. We've been working on a new touchscreen label printing scale that syncs seamlessly with your Square catalog.
We showed a preview of this at the NRF conference earlier this year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lcklMPjxF8
We already have a Shopify-integrated version of this scale being used at over 50 store locations across North America, and we're exploring whether there’s enough demand from sellers for a similar integration with Square.
If you currently use label printing scales (CAS, DIGI, Bizerba, etc.) and are interested in what we're building, we invite you to fill out this short form: https://forms.gle/qyfT3W4B4SaHTmpA6
Or feel free to reply here - thanks!

I’m having the same price reading issue. Were you able to fix it? What was your final configuration or Label Format? Thanks!
Hi, yes, we fixed it. When entering a product number, use 5 digits for the code. Repeat that same code (5 digits) in the PLU field, BUT ADD A ZERO.
So, if your product number is 12345, the UPC field must be 123450.
Hi, I wanted to ask if there’s any way to contact you directly. I’ve tried already, but it doesn’t seem to work. Could you please help me with your settings?
Also, should this be configured in Square (Items) or directly on the Hobart scale? For example, if my product number is 12345, where exactly do I repeat that same code and add the zero?
Sure. You can call me (617) 800-9758. I'll explain to you how to do that.
