inflated inventory in options

I sell one of a kind pieces as individual items as in sets. When I create the options for each piece and a set, I have to add inventory to each option line so they will be available to purchase. Now it looks like I have 3 pieces instead of just two. Is there any work around for the set option I created in options to not show any additional inventory but pull the inventory from the individual lines?

Hmm, can you send a screenshot of what you're seeing? Sometimes a visual helps me understand an issue from a bird's eye view @beaddazzling

I have one of each item and want to offer the option to purchase the pendant or earrings separately or as a set. The only way to have the "set" option show in the dropdown box on the web page for each item and the set is to have a separate option/variation line. But in doing that, I have to show there is inventory for the "set" line, thus increasing the inventory. I have two pieces, but  inventory looks like I have 3. I am planning to have a discount promotion on sets, but can't risk 2 customers wanting the same one of a kind item and set at the same time. How can I make this work and still show only one of each item as inventory?

Hey there, @beaddazzling

Stepping in for @JustinC on this one.

From what you described and the goal you're trying to accomplish, how you're operating is the best way to go about this. I could suggest adding a disclaimer of the inventory limitations.

Another option I could suggest, would be to take a look at Square for Retail. It has a more elaborate inventory option that could fit your needs. Here is a Support Article for more info or you can reach out to our Retail team via phone support

The retail option doesn't work for me as there is no brick and mortar location. My sales are from crafting events or home parties. The custom order option is for online sales only. Would a variation work?

A variation wouldn't work as you would still need to track inventory of the items separately. Something else to consider would be to just create separate items and making an automatic discount if those two items are in a cart at the same time, but that is only available in the Point of Sale app and not in the online store.

I know this may not feel like the best option, but you may want to consider setting aside some stock specifically for the "set" option so you know you won't sell out.
