categorize shipping charges

Ok I ship some items and I don't quite understand how the shipping charges work with my income.

Shipping charges do not show up in the Sales Summary Reports.  They are not in the Category or Item Reports.  They are available under Reports > Service Charges, but I cannot categorize them because they are not available to select under Items > Service Charges.  Thus they are not appropriately taxed and I have to do a bunch of work arounds to account for the Shipping Charges.

I don't get it...Am I doing something wrong?

Also I have seen Courier Tips and Delivery charges in this section too which I don't understand.  Wouldn't those just be pass through so I should never see them?

Hello @ggilmore

The shipping stuff can be confusing! In order to better assist I would like to get some additional information. Where did you set up your shipping rates, can you walk me through how you did that? Also can to confirm you are trying to tax the shipping? If I can get more insight into your ultimate goal? Thank you!

They are setup automatically via Square online.  I do not know where I could setup the categorization or the taxation of these.

OK, I think I figured out the problem!  And I have questions:

If I look at My Categories Sales report, it shows total Gross Revenue of $224,654.37, but when I look at my Sales Summary report it shows $65.52 MORE because the Service charges do not show as Categories.

1. Why do Service Charges not show up in the Category Sales report?  I would like to categorize my service charges and have them show up like other items in my Category Sales report.  This is how to recognize different kinds of income in my bookkeeping software. Why can't I categorize them?

2. When I export the Sales Summary report, it just shows the total gross, not the breakdown for the Items v. service charges.  It took me forever to figure out what was out of balance and not showing up between the two exported reports.  Please, either export the service charges v. items in the Sales Summary report or show them in the category sales report please.

3. I have taxes setup to be included on these shipping charges, but it doesn't look like any taxes have been added when I look at the Service Charges Report.  Why not?

4. I understand the shipping fees being collected.  We collect the shipping fees from the guest and then print the slip and UPS or whatever shipper charges us from our account (right?), so there is real income to me.  But why am I even seeing the Courier Tip or Delivery Fees?

 * I could maybe understand why you are showing me the Delivery Fee.  I assume the Delivery Fee passes back to the delivery company, but how? as a part of the Square Fees?  How can I track down a single Delivery transaction to see how this works?

* But why do I even see the Courier Fees? I never see that, it is charged by the courier company.  Why would I even have to recognize that as my income instead of them?
