Watch out for this scam on Square online

So I've had the last 4 out of 5 sales disputed and Square has taken my funds back from my account. Turns out someone has copied my eBay listing and is selling my item there, using my Square online item to basically drop ship the product for them, then getting the card transaction reversed. Square says there is nothing they can do about it.

Hi @OzSTS,

I'm really sorry to hear that your business has been targeted by an online scam. I noticed that you've been speaking with one of our Square Champions in this thread, and that other Sellers have recommended looking into Square 3D Secure as a potential safeguard.

To clarify how it works: once you enable Square 3D Secure, your customers may be asked to verify that they are authorised to use the card during checkout. When a payment meets the criteria you've set, it will automatically go through 3D Secure verification. It’s worth noting that payments initiated by the Seller, such as in-person sales, manually entered card details, or orders taken by phone, won’t go through this verification process.

One potential limitation is that if a fraudulent buyer has access to both the card details and the personal information needed to complete the verification (such as the cardholder’s name, phone number, or other details), the payment might still pass 3D Secure checks. However, the key benefit is that if a payment is verified through 3D Secure and later disputed due to fraud, you as a Seller are not held responsible.

If you need any help submitting supporting evidence for your existing disputed payments, please let us know, or reach out to our Support Team so we can assist.
