Selling subscriptions with Square Online

Why do you have to create separate item based from the frequency? Shouldn’t providing a monthly and/or annually subscription enough since it already gives you a dropdown as option? Thanks.

Hey there @ranchsports.  I’m confused as to why you think you need to have separate items for different frequencies.  When you set up your plan, you can add as many frequencies as you want to the plan.  When you attach that plan to an item, the one item should be all you need no matter how you sell it.

Can you please either post a screen shot with the messages you are getting?  And/or describe your subscription plan?

It's a membership subscription plan. For example, the item was set for $29.99. If we do it monthly it works great. But if we do it annually, it's still billed at $29.99 for the whole year which is not what we wanted.

@ranchsports Thank you.  You made me realize that I misinterpreted your original post.  Now I totally understand your issue here.  So……

Square Subscriptions is currently in sort of a version 1.5 state.  As it stands right now, it is for very simple one subscription to one item sorts of subscriptions.  So, as you have already found out, if you want a Monthly subscription at one price, and a quarterly at another and an annual at yet another price, you must create three separate items in order to offer these three subscriptions.  I can’t answer the why of this, and I doubt the engineers will or should.  The fact is this is the way it is right now with Square Subscriptions.  I know that the team is working on enhancements to this but for now you can’t do what you want with Square Subscriptions.  It doesn’t really matter why, since this is just the fact of the matter.

I’d recommend you use a third-party subscription/membership management app that integrates with Square.  These can be found in the Square App Marketplace.  I would recommend looking at SuperPay, PayWhirl, Evergent, Subport and Submatic, but there are probably others.  Most of them should come with a free trial period so you can integrate them with your account and test them out before committing.

I hope that helps.

Hi,

We are a Square Partner and created an app on the Square marketplace to solve this issue.

You can bill customers for however long you want. You can also give them credits or tokens per subscription and have them redeem it through the app. Everything will show up on your Square POS like a regular order.

You can also create as many tiers on the app as you want. It's fully customizable. Customers can even make one-time orders.
