Hi @wiseanttech_m - Thanks for your post.

Unfortunately, there isn't a direct way to do this within the settings currently available in Square Online. You could create a modifier for your items for Tax Exempt Status, to allow your customers to let you know whether or not they are tax exempt, but this would not automatically "remove" the tax from their Online purchase. You could then manually refund the customer the amount of the tax for their purchase to get that money back to them.

Would it make more sense to Invoice your tax exempt customers?

If you could provide more context about your business and set up, we could make some additional suggestions 🙂

I'll keep an eye out for your reply!

Hi @wiseanttech_m,

Thanks for querying this with the Community, and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

Unfortunately at this time, there is no way for an individual buyer to add their tax exempt status when placing an order through Square Online. I can see that this has been discussed, and raised as a feature request in the past, in relation to Point of Sale transactions. However, as your query relates to Online sales specifically, I’d recommend filing a feature request on our Ideate Board, rather than just lending your support to the existing request.

If you do submit a feature request, I’d encourage you to add as much detail as possible to demonstrate the use case, and highlight the impact that this limitation currently has on your business.

We have two websites set up. One for retail and one (password protected) for tax exempt customers and the entire website is tax exempt. We hate having to do that do to inventory purposes, but we have been asking square to fix this for 5 years and still no fix. So frustrating especially since we have over 100,000 items.

I agree it is frustrating not to have a tax exempt option for online purchases. I'm not always available to take orders over the phone and that is currently the only way a customer can have the tax removed from their order. It would be so helpful for them to be able to order online and use a coupon code or some other way to receive tax exemption. Or make this as an option in customer accounts so tax is removed automatically.
