How to manually reorder categories in Square Online after UI update?

Hi community,

 

I noticed that Square recently updated the UI for Items & Services → Categories.

 

Previously, we could reorder categories directly in

Items → Categories → Rearrange,

as shown in Square’s help documentation here:

However, in the current dashboard UI, the Rearrange button is missing:
Dashboard → Items & Services → Categories

What I see now :

 

  • I can only expand categories

  • I can reorder items inside a category

  • I can reorder categories inside POS layout (Menus → POS Layout)

     

     

    But I cannot manually reorder categories for Square Online anymore.

     

     

    My goal:

     

     

    I want to control the order in which categories appear on my Square Online ordering page, not only on POS layout.

     

     

    Questions:

     

    1. Is category sorting for Square Online removed or moved to a new place?

    2. Is there still a way to manually drag and reorder categories for Square Online display?

    3. If not, what controls the category display order on the online ordering page now?

1.  I can still order mine but you do it through the categories in the dashboard.  Now this may be different depending on if you use the retail or food version of the online store.

3.  Alot of what you will see is based on "Sales Channel" Now, that is what makes the category show up or not.  Also, item level availability can be set also with sales channels.  You can bulk edit this in the item catalog also.

I keep everything in a reporting category, and then only use certain categories for my websites.

Hey there @CozyCoffeeTX. Based on your screen name, I'm assuming you are a F&B seller.  If so, you got a couple of emails a month or so ago when Square moved our online stores from using categories to using menus.  At that time, Square automatically copied our online categories to a menu called "Online Manu" which is found at Items & Services > Menus.  If you edit that, then click on the three dots to the right of "Online Menu" at the top, you can select "Rearrange Menu Groups" and put those in the desired order.

Yes, we are F&B. I took those steps you outlined. Unfortunately, we I click on the 3 dots to the right of my online menu, the only option I have is to either "Edit Menu Details" or "Delete menu"

When I click Edit Menu Details, it quickly flashes my categories, and I can see where I could rearrange them, but then I am taken to another screen where I can edit my Menu Details

Once I click save, it takes me back to the beginning Menus window and I never have a chance to arrange categories.

I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I'm on hold with Chat Support, and they are struggling to find a solution as well. We have one online store serving three locations. I've arranged the categories before by going to the  Items & Services > Categories route.

@CozyCoffeeTX I'm doing a little more research, too.  And of course I know you used to do it that way.  But Square is in the process of migrating us all to do it this new way.  Once you get used to it, it is much easier and more intuitive that using categories, which was NEVER the right way to do it.

@CozyCoffeeTX I see what you did wrong.  Once you go to Items & Services > Menus, DO NOT click on the three dots there.  Rather, If you edit that (by clicking on the desired menu box), then click on the three dots to the right of "Online Menu" at the top or that screen, you can select "Rearrange Menu Groups" and put those in the desired order.
