Help received in resizing product photos

Greetings from Tokyo.

I have an online store and was having problems trying to get the right sizes for product photos. They were showing up very large and I did not like the look.

I requested help from Square and after a a little while received the following from Taylor, and want to share. It has a lot of useful information on sizes to use for photos and headers in your Weebly sites.

Hi There!

Thank you for reaching out to Square Online & Weebly support! My name is Taylor and I would be more than happy to help you out today! Thank you for your patience, we have had a massive amount of inquiries and we are working to get to them as quickly as possible. I understand you are having some issues with the photos on your website. I am going to send you the image guidelines. I can definitely understand the frustration with the images. The idea is to have a uniform size to all photos to create a clean looking site - but I understand some products are taller while others can be wide.

What I recommend is using a photo editing software to create a uniform size "canvas" (i.e. 600x600) and then pasting the photo on top of that "canvas" so that it fits within the shape (a rectangle will be forced to fit inside of a larger square canvas). I like using Pixlr.com. You can use their free editing software. To create a "canvas" I go to pixlr.com > Advanced Pixlr E > Create new (on the left) > then use the box on the far right to set my dimensions and create a blank "canvas". Then I go to Layer > Add image as layer. Please let me know if I can help with anything else.

Unfortunately, we don’t have a feature that will allow you to edit individual product sizes at this time; however, your feedback is always helpful when planning for future releases, so I will take note and pass it along to our product team for you. Since we develop our software on an ongoing basis thanks to your feedback, I encourage you to visit our Weebly Community to share your suggestion for others like you to vote on. You may also share it on our Seller Community. Please let me know if you have any other questions, comments or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you! Thank you so much for contacting Square and have a wonderful day!

General Photos:

  • The best approach for photos added to any page of your site is to use JPEGs that are no more than 1000 pixels on their longest side.
  • For high quality images, we recommend using a photo hosting site made for photographers like Flickr.com, and embedding the images from there. We don’t design around larger, uncompressed, high-quality images because we need to handle millions of images from millions of users. As a result, third party image hosting can be a better way to make sure your image quality doesn’t go down.
  • If your images are being rotated upon upload, use this site to fix that issue.

Header Images:

  • For images that are part of your site design (e.g. header/banner images, background images), there isn’t really a definitive answer. A good rule of thumb is to use an image that’s around 2000 pixels wide and at least 1000 pixels high, making the image large enough to look good at full width on any screen size.

Category Images:

  • These must be at least 160 pixels on the shortest side, and have a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Product/Item Images:

  • Product images should typically have a 1:1 aspect ratio, where 600x600 pixels is generally a good size. Anything over a 641 pixel width will begin to zoom in on the photo.

Just spinning my wheels here....  For item images, this is posted in several help places "at least 1,000 pixels in width or height."  Weebly answered a similar question saying 800 or 900 pixels square is the best.  A couple of posts suggest 720 x 720 (this is what the old site wanted)...  It would be nice to get a straight, precise answer to the item image size question!

I agree! I have spent days trying to find an answer *before* I do a huge photo shoot. I finally did an online chat with Support yesterday, and got a DIFFERENT answer of 600x600 px or a 1:1 photo. But the online support article states that anything under 700 px eliminates the ability for a customer to zoom in. (And of course, it seems that every online sales platform has yet a different photo size & orientation requirment.)

This was very helpful information-thanks a lot! I'm not clear on the suggestion to use Flickr and embed the images from there. How do you embed your images from Flickr into Square product pages or library?

Thanks again for taking the time to post the info you received from Square. This subject has been an ongoing experiment.....
