Can Square Canada accept USD funds?

I currently have a Square account for processing advertising payments for a publication in Ontario, Canada. The currency is obviously in CAD funds.

My question is this: I also publish a second print magazine and sell subscriptions to the print publication. Up until now I have been using PayPal only because 90% of my subscribers are located in the U.S. If I integrated Square to accept CC payments for this publication, a) Can U.S. customers pay via their credit card in U.S. currency even though I have a Canadian Square account? The exchange rate is to my benefit, but U.S. customers usually being charged $22 USD won't understand being charged $30 CAD funds.

Am I allowed to simultaneously have a Square account in Canada and a Square account in the U.S.? I live in Canada, but I do have a U.S. P.O. Box located in Niagara Falls, NY. Is this possible? My only concern is how do I get my Square funds deposited from a U.S. account into my bank in Canada?

Please help!! Wanting to do more business using Square!

Hello @PublisherBlair! Great questions, I'll answer each one below:

Can U.S. customers pay via their credit card in U.S. currency even though I have a Canadian Square account?

When you accept a payment in Canada the payment is processed in CAD. Keep in mind your customers may be charged the a conversion fee by their card-issuing bank to complete the payment.

Am I allowed to simultaneously have a Square account in Canada and a Square account in the U.S.?

You could have two separate Square accounts. However, to create a US Square account you have to be located in the US to set up the account. You must also provide the required information to sign up for an account in the US and finally, you'd need to link a US bank account (you couldn't link a Canadian account.)

I wish there was an easier way to use Square in different countries. If anything changes we'll post here to let you know!

I found all this out AFTER I signed up for Square....believing that it was like every other e-commerce platform ie Shopify.  Once I'm ready to launch, I will be moving away from square and going with a platform that offers multi-currency....I just have to choose which one to go with as there are many.

Square needs to move this forward if they plan on staying the in the game anytime soon.

What platform would you switch to? Whatever I use has to be HIPAA compliant and can also email pay requests (one platform I was interested in only texts the pay requests). Oddly enough even though this forum and Square customer service told me I couldn't charge in USD through Square Canada, Square did let me link it to my US bank account and my client's payment came through in USD which I verified with the bank my Square account is linked to.

It's likely not Square, but Canada that is creating these problems. It's the same with all the other platforms too. Moneris is a monopoly payment processor owned by TD, RBC and Scotia. They do whatever they want and they don't want to let players like Square into the space and they have way too much power in this country.

I've been finding that the system gives me no choice. It sends the invoice to my U.S. clients listed as U.S. Dollars, but actually charges that price in Canadian!  Example:  If my price is $50 USD, they get the invoice like that, but when they pay, Square charges the $50 in CAD, so only charges $38 USD.  So to fix it, I have to charge the US customer $64 USD on the invoice, so it will charge $64 CAD ($50USD).  It's so confusing for the clients and for me. Let me know if you find another way around this.

I love using Square, but it's kind of unbelievable to me that this is still a Feature Request FOUR YEARS after it was first posted. I mean, if it was a low-level problem I get it. But my U.S. customers are dumbfounded that they are seeing $100 USD on their invoice for my $70 USD charge. For each new customer, I have to explain this amateur fiasco anew and get them to trust me enough to put through a payment in USD 30% higher than the actual price (at least this is what it looks like to them before they see their statement). Even for my repeat customers I have to keep taking them through this strange process. Is this really Square's fault?  Or is it something being forced by Canada and its payment monopolies to keep companies like Square down?  Let us know. I won't bother you guys about this if its out of your hands.  Thanks.

99% of my customers are international and most are from USA. If Square could do only one thing, in this regard, and simply put on the invoices that I generate, that the funds they (my clients) will be charged, be shown in THEIR currency. Or at least a close approximation ("you will be charged $100 USD based on today's current exchange rate of .30345%).

Because every time I invoice a US customer, they think I've made an error.

Right now I'm exploring other invoicing methods. (except PayPal). Payoneer is one I already use, and I'm going to try Stripe.

So "heads up Square". If someone there with a Big Brain doesn't get this figured out, I think Square is gonna lose a lot of customers.

I like Square; it's easy to use. But, the simple fact is that my clients' payments means more to me. 😁

Welcome to the Community, @Laura-Anne

Completely understand the frustration of having this issue whenever creating invoices for customers in other countries. Since this is a feature request for our Invoices platform, there is the possibility of adding a note to your Invoices template.

This note could include information about the currency being in the in Canadian currency.

I would recommend posting this in the Canadian Community ideate Board too, as a Feature Request.

How and why is this still only a feature request after 4 YEARS!!!? Why won't Square simply tell the community WHY they refuse to offer this to their customers? I've been working on my account set up for over a week, meetings with the bank and with Square over the phone and at no point did they tell me this wouldn't work for my ecommerce site. Let me carry on like a **bleep** until I got to setting up my payment links to find out I cannot set the currency to USD. Very unprofessional, out of touch and completely tone deaf to the needs of the customers you serve.
