Best Operational Flow for Secret Menu Items?

I need help figuring out the best way to handle a weird and specific issue that's come up for my restaurant. We have a membership, that grants access to a "secret" menu item for a certain group of customers. Currently, we have that item set up but not publishing to online ordering, and send a direct link to our secret group each month. Here are the issues that have arisen:

1. The item type is showing as a "shipment," even though I have all item shipping turned off.

2. It can be ordered at any time of day, even when the restaurant is closed.

3. It does not have a pickup time associated with it.

4. Customers who order using the direct item link can't add any other items to their order.

What is the best solution to this? I was kind of thinking that we need an entirely separate menu, that's just for our "Secret" members, which would include the hidden menu item, and is available only via a link. This would make their order process look much more normal. But is this the best way to do this? And how can I create a second menu that's only visible to "secret" members?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Are you open to making the menu available online? With Square Online, there is a password protected page feature that could work well. You could place the secret menu there and share the password only with the people you want to have access. Other than that, nothing else comes to mind right now, but I will keep thinking while we wait for others to share their ideas.

Hi @HoneysFCP, thanks for posting. I love your secret menu, that is so fun!

To be clear, are you sending a checkout link? I will tag some of our Square Champions who can share their feedback. If you need anything else just let me know.

Yes, I send a checkout link, but I’m beginning to think that is maybe not the right solution for this situation.

That’s what I was thinking. Basically, make a copy of the existing menu, then add the secret menu item to only the copied version, and then password protect that menu? That way, orders would flow normally.

Based on feedback from other sellers, it seems like the password-protected page with the menu is currently the best option. If you have any additional questions or need help setting it up, just let me know! Thanks so much for your patience.

Hm, could you make the item "Hidden" and then send that direct link to the hidden item vs the checkout or payment link? I think they'd still be able to add it to their cart then. I'm not 100% sure if that's what you meant by "not published to the online store".

See: https://squareup.com/help/us/en/article/6881-sell-hidden-items-in-square-online-store

Or make a separate page in Square Online with the item as the "featured item" and then delete that page from the navigation menu? I think you would still be able to send a link to that page (because it still exists, its just not accessible on the menu), but not 100% certain. You may also need the item to still be set to hidden, so it doesn't appear elsewhere.

Password protection seems like a good option as well, although I've not tried it myself! See: https://squareup.com/help/us/en/article/7047-password-protection

Hmmm, this doesn't really work. I can create the item and mark it as "hidden," and then generate a link to send to people to order that item...but they don't then have access to the rest of the menu in Square Online to order additional stuff. In other words, if they use the link for that item, they can ONLY order that one item. This obviously isn't ideal.

I completely forgot about the option to hide items—thanks for the reminder! It’s always great to see how different sellers navigate situations like this. Really appreciate it!

We use the password protected page for our waitlist members to sign up so that the membership purchase option is only available to those with invitations. It works well for us that way @MayaP
