Square terminal customer name

When using an iPad for POS and Square Terminal for payments only, we have to skip past the customer name screen to allow access to the square terminal and we miss obtaining the customer name for the ticket unless we manually type it in. If we use square reader instead and insert a card for payment the customer name fills in automatically and payment is made. Any ideas on how to mirror the square reader behavior on the square terminal?

Hey @Danolone - can I just check how you're using the terminal? 

As if you're using it as a stand alone device you should be able to swipe/insert to take the customer name (although I think you may sometimes need to do it again for payment at the swipe option?). 


If you're using it as a connected terminal (with an iPad etc) then it's not possible. This is because of the way the payment is handled, with the sale being pushed at the end to Square who in turn push it to your terminal for the payment - with the payment confirmation then going back the other way. They're not connected directly together in the same way as a standard reader.

We use it exactly as we used the square reader. Connected to the iPad for payments only. This is really a terrible design flaw if it won’t pick up customer names - very big time waster and confusion is caused many times due to names being entered wrongly or forgotten by the cashier. I guess the only benefit to the terminal is that additional tips are gathered. I hope square realizes that the square terminal is a huge step backward from the square reader and pushes updates to solve.

@Danolone it's about how the system works. 

It does its job really well and I was really glad when they extended its usability so it can also be a reader for other devices.

Does anyone know if Square Register picks up customer names automatically? If we replaced the iPad and terminal with the square register instead would that work?
