Square Terminal v1 Not Working After Firmware Update

The title of this thread has been edited from the original: Black Screen of Death v1: Firmware Update broke Square Terminal.

My Square Terminal had battery life, internet connection, AND I plugged it in before starting the forced update two days ago.

It started the update and now it's completely unresponsive.

What I tried:

  • Held power button down for over a minute plugged in and not plugged in

  • Tested power cord and it charges a rechargeable flashlight just fine

All I get now is a black screen... it just won't turn on now that the update occurred. Customer Support's solution... buy a new one. Square's update broke it! I hardly used it and it was in pristine condition, kept in it's box like it was brand new.

v1 which they just discontinued support for a couple months ago doesn't mean they can provide forced updates that break the hardware. They should be offering support in this instance since this isn't normal failure, it's forced failure. If the firmware wasn't compatible, it should not be forced. Ultimately, I'm disgusted at the horrible customer service and that this company's firmware has broken my system... and I also lost a sale.

Sorry to hear about this issue, @homebite! This certainly isn't the type of experience we want you to have.

Would you mind sharing the last 4 digits of this Terminal's serial number? You'll find this number located on the bottom of the device.

Thanks! I'll be on the lookout for your reply.
