I am testing my new reader and trying to charge $2. This reader is declining all payments and stating "this card must be tapped or inserted". I have tried multiple credit cards. They are undamaged, not maxed out, and not expired. They do have the chip, but they also have the magstrip. The app says the reader is connected. Please help!
Hello @Northmark !
I’m betting the software is currently configured to not allow swiped payments. Easy fix!
On your device: More -> Settings -> Checkout.
Look for the section talking about swiping chip cards. Make sure this is enabled. You’ll have to read through a liability warning first but then you should be able to swipe cards.
Do note that the liability warning talks about the fact that swiping cards is notoriously unsafe. If you get a chargeback when swiping the card you will automatically lose the contested payment. The swiper is a good way to get going with payments, but I recommend either enabling Tap to Pay on your Apple Device or Android Device or to consider picking up a contactless reader.
Hope this helps!
Thank you so much! That worked. I appreciate your help and the detailed information on the risks of swiping cards.
