Hey @IDUKE.  Someone told you incorrectly, if you are talking about a card processing network merchant ID.  Here’s why.

As Square customers, we do not have our own merchant processing accounts with the card networks.  We use Square’s merchant account.  Square is, in effect, the “customer” of the card processing networks, not us.  Therefore we don’t need to go through the hassle of setting up a merchant processing account, which for most of us very small businesses is a perfect arrangement and, usually, a quick way of beginning to accept credit/debit cards.

If you have a situation where you must have a merchant account ID, then Square is probably not the right fit for you.  Neither will any company like Square (Clover, PayPal, etc) be a good fit.  You’ll have to reach out to your local bank to start the process of opening your own merchant account.

Having said all of that, it MIGHT be possible that the person who misinformed you was telling you that they received Square’s merchant ID, somehow.  But, even if they did, it wouldn’t be of much use to them since it is not THEIR ID.  Anyway, we — as Square sellers — do not have our own merchant ID with the networks because we don’t need one.
