I may be buying a square terminal off of a friend but want to make sure I can link to my account before I do. Also, do the terminals keep track of inventory ?

Welcome to the Square community as I see this is your first post.
The Terminal would be able to link to your account. As Square devices are not specific to a customer, but are specific to a customer's Login. So ask your friend to see how they log in to Square, User ID and a Password or Device Code are the 2 ways. Either of these can be changed when signing in on the Device. As for Inventory Square takes care of inventory in your Square account in the Square Dashboard through a computer. Now the Terminal can access this Inventory when a sale is made or add to it if receiving inventory.
So your stores inventory is NOT stored on the Terminal but the terminal accesses the internet and looks through your Square account at the inventory and can update it as needed. Sales (subtract) Receive Inventory (Add) .
My recommendation is to get familiar with the Square Dashboard to see your Balance and your Sales Reports etc.
So if you have a Square account all you would need to do is go to your Square Dashboard > Device Management > add a device

Then Follow the Steps and you can then have Square assign a Device code or use your Account Id and Password to log into Your Square account.
