Silent release of square register gen2

Was that a silent release of square register gen2 now available on there website.

It would be interesting to see how it compares to gen 1

Super annoying. We got a gen 1 a few months back in prep for switching to square, only to find out when we started switching on 1/1 that it no longer supported updates!!

We have a gen 1 and gen 2 now, and they are the EXACT same. Different software that looks the same, but the physical device has not changed.

"If it ain't broke don't fix it." right? The design has always been sleek so I don'y blame them for not fully changing the full POS. the reader is however different so that will be interesting to try out! 

Chances are if they did change it someone would also complain about the change. It's easy for us to find the little things we don't like but square its tons of feedback and does an insane amount of tests before releasing any new devices.

@Lovewell  I’m glad they didn’t change the design, I do like the way it looks.

I just realized the new one I just bought at Best Buy is a Gen 1 also, and just found out about Gen1 V1/Gen 1 V2. I sure hope they don’t also stop updates from going to the Gen 1 v2 I just bought….

We always buy hardware directly through square. However- we have a gen 1 v2 which is still doing great! But yes- I hope that doesn't become obsolete anytime soon (insert sweat emoji)

How can you tell if it is Gen 1 V1 / Gen 1 V2

The 2nd Gen is very expensive for my small nonprofit. We only use it for 5 months out of the year so I am not sure if it is worth it to purchase the brand new one?

Our first shop still has an old one that can no longer get updates (don't worry square did their part at reminding us haha) But we JUST ordered the 2Gen yesterday and it is coming on Saturday! We are stoked because our last register we've had since we opened in 2020 and it's operating at dinosaur speed. We will absolutely report back with how we love it! Assuming we will haha. We haven't disliked any new square products yet!

It seems like a lot of people use the Register. We have always been happy with the iPad Square Stand. Multi-functional. Yes sometimes iOS updates may cause bugs, but we've survived. It's nice being able to reuse the iPad when the time comes.
