How many of you no longer take cash?

Do you still take cash?

We are in the process of opening our restaurant/retail and we are thinking of only taking Credit/Debit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. To avoid theft and crime.

We do accept cash. We have many loyal everyday customers who actually rarely if ever use a card. I completely understand if you have issues with theft and crime though. That is not fun at all.

@Lovewell Our place will be downtown LA and at my current company most of my customers pay with Credit/Debit cards and Apple Pay.

@GourmetOnWheels Oh yeah! I for sure can see just accepting cards for you! It would also help if you ever get washed bills.

@Lovewell I just looked you up on Google maps and you are not on there yet as all three spaces are places that are closed.

@GourmetOnWheels Oh interesting! I will look into that! When we first opened we had some issues with yelp and google because the building we are in was a different business. Thank you for bringing that to my attentnion!

Interesting question, @GourmetOnWheels.  Before the pandemic, Piper’s was pretty much a consistent 50/50 split between card and cash.  That changed drastically and irrevocably during the pandemic and it now runs 80/20 in favor of cards.

I’ve toyed with the concept, but my geo-political business location (Kentucky, the lovely folks who gifted Mitch McConnel and Rand Paul to the US Senate 😫) has more than the normal share of libertarians and downright Luddites.  Some of my regular customers have never owned a credit/debit card or a cell phone, so I’d lose a not-so-insignificant part of my sales and my reputation, I’m afraid.  I’ve made no secret that we take any legal form of payment because “we want to make it easy for our customers to spend their money with us!”  So, the obvious answer is I probably won’t totally eliminate cash.  I’m not sure I’d know how to spin that in my favor and stave off the inevitable public outcry that would happen here.

Thankfully, I don’t have a theft problem.  I’m sorry to hear that you are having to deal with such an issue at all.

In LA a lot of restaurants are now slowly switching to Credit/Debit cards over cash. Walking out at the end of the night at 3 AM with a bag of cash to the lot where the car is, is not the safest, and then you always have some team members that skim as well.

Pre Covid the cash/card ratio was +/- 40%/60%.  Currently its closer to 20/80.  We won't turn away from accepting cash.  Why toss the 3%+  savings that swiping costs?

This is such an interesting question. We considered switching to "no cash" during the height of the pandemic, but a decent number of our customers pay with cash, so we decided not to. And honestly, it's nice to have some sales that don't incur the processing fees.

There was actually another local coffee shop that opened during the pandemic and didn't accept cash. There was a large community backlash because the neighborhood felt that it unfairly excluded people who didn't have access to bank accounts/credit cards. That wasn't something we had originally considered, but our community is very socioeconomically diverse -- many people have cash-only jobs -- so for us, it feels more inclusive to accept all forms of payment. Just one more factor to consider.

For what it's worth, we've never had an issue with theft in 5 years of being open. There are definitely cash handling mistakes within the team, but even those or rare. In that time, I think we've had a fake bill only once. We close our drawers each night and keep all surplus cash and pending cash deposits in a safe (only 3 of us know the code).

Very this. It's taking in to account the fact that not everyone has access to a card for payment.

We still take cash in our out of town locations, but our city locations are purley cashless. This is for several reasons, security, the city folk can be a bit more tech savy and when cashless there is no need to take time to count and deposit cash receipts at the bank. Disadvantage is there are the occasional lost sales.

We will be in Downtown LA  where the median income is $109,000.00/year. That's one of the reasons we will be cashless.

I was actually so surprised when going to visit a few of my favourite bakeries on a trip and realized that most don't take cash.

The first time this happened to me was at Milk Bar in NYC back in 2019. Rocked up with some freshly exchanged USD and was told, "We don't accept cash." Well, I wasn't about to have FOREX charges for cookies, so...I left without a purchase.

Then just last week one of my fave places in Toronto said they don't take cash and are better for it.

However, for the clients *I* have, some are on fixed budgets (seniors) or only have cash (kids coming in to buy a cookie with their allowance) and couldn't imagine only being cashless.

Granted, our float is maybe $100. We keep $50 in change. Security isn't a huge concern for us.

"Snickerdoodle" girl who comes in with her piggy bank and often "pays" for her single cookie with a unicorn sticker as a tip?? 😍

Another customer pointed out that we were going to be a special part of her memories for the rest of her life and I honestly couldn't even fathom it.

There are days I really love this job for reasons that have nothing to do with the job itself.

Awww, yes! I love this so much! I got a little choked up about the idea of being a special part of their memories -- what a beautiful honor.

One of my favorite things is seeing the kids who were newborns when we first opened five years ago, now coming in and ordering a donut at the counter. There are so many of them whose first outing was to our cafe (sometimes their parents brought them straight from the hospital!) and it's such a joy to be watching them grow up.

You're absolutely right -- there are so many things to love that have nothing to do with the actual work. (Which is so helpful to remember in the moments when the "job" part is extra challenging.)

@lenjobakes This is the most happy-making thing I've heard all week, and I would personally love to receive unicorn stickers as a tip. 🦄 🍪
