Discount feature upgrades needed.

I run a coffee shop, and we have a fairly extensive food and retail side as well. I really really really really would love if square added some discount features to help us reign some things in….

We share our space with a yoga studio, and offer drink discounts for teachers. I ran a discount report and found that we average $50/month in that discount being applied to items from our food and retail! I’m sure this happens from my staff adding the discount to the end of the sale instead of inside the drink item page, unintentionally. But I would LOVE if I could just say inside square  “this discount should only apply to these items/categories.
same for our holiday promos - we are doing retail discounts that I don’t want added to food and drinks. If square had a discount rules option where “Build Your Own Gift Basket discount could only be applied to these retail items”.
…a dream! Feels like it’s definitely possible because automatic discounts can be applied this way. But I don’t want them automatic…..

who else has this problem and would benefit from the upgrade?? What other discount rules would you like to see?

Hello @GFC25th ,

Regarding your first requests for the discount feature, doesn't that feature already exist?  You can automatically apply discounts to certain items/categories now.   I believe they can be shut off on an individual transactions if needed as well.

Or was there something else you were requesting?

Can confirm that, at least within POS, a discount that's been automatically applied can be removed as needed. I have had my fair share of mess-ups in that regard 🤣

I tell ya - this is a whole training line item on my training checklist that everyone signs! But fast-paced makes it tricky, especially if they add something after their drink has been rung up and discount applied. And my staff is late teens and early twenties - that attention to detail, when it’s not their money effected, is tricky 😅

This applies it *automatically*, though. So I don’t want my drinks automatically discounted for each customer. Unless I’m wrong? (Which would be amazing, but that’s how I understand that feature)

You're correct.

There is another option where you can set automated discounts for a specific customer group (in your case you would need to add all the teachers to a segmented group) BUT it applies to all items across the board which it seems would not work in your case. Also, operationally the customer needs to be added to the sale for the automated discount to apply which in my case we always use their phone # as the unique identifier and its easy for staff to look up and add to sale.

Now if there was a combination of the customer group and item category the problem would be solved without staff needing to apply manual discounts BUT the Square discounts aren't that granular at the moment.

That was a long winded way of saying there's not a solution I know of that you're looking for.

Maybe we can make a feature request? That would be a nice automated way for me to implement other benefits for Members at my club ie. 10% off Apps or something. Anytime I can get away from staff having to manually enter discounts I will.

Thanks for reading this long 🙂
