Can I use my Square Register for Restaurant and Retail?

I own a restaurant that has been doing carryout only since the pandemic started. We are about to open up for indoor dining again in a few weeks and I'm hoping to use my Square register to continue to run Retail during the day and then the Restaurant POS at night. Is it possible to toggle between the two on the Register?

 

Can I also continue to use the bar code scanner at night with the Restaurant POS? Lets say a customer comes in for dinner and then wants to buy a bottle of olive oil on their way out. I'd like to able to scan in that product and add it to their check. 

 

I have been hoping to talk to someone from Square, but all my emails have gone on answered and I'm getting extremely frustrated. I used to have a dedicated sales rep who was fantastic and now its just white noise.

Hey there! 👋

 

At this time this is a feature request as the Square Register is unable to run both applications simultaneously @RLiss. However, you may be able to add these retail items to your restaurants menu as a retail category.  Currently Square for Restaurants is able to take advantage of Barcode Scanners and you should be able to ring up items with it.

 

Important note: Square for Restaurants is unable to add stock or create items using the Barcode Scanner at this time like Square for Retail does.

Hi @JJ_ 

Thanks for responding. Just to clarify, I wouldn't be running the programs simultaneously. I'd be using square retail for lunch: 12-4pm and then at night 5:30-11pm I would use the restaurant POS. Can I log out of square retail and then log into restaurant at night?

 

When you say Square for restaurants is unable to add stock, all my items with inventory will still sync across all my platforms, correct? So if I have 7 bottles of olive oil in my Online shop, it will also show as 7 bottles in Square retail and in Square Restaurant? I just can't add stock using the scanner? I would have to manually add it on my computer?

To clarify, yes, you are able to log out of Square for Restaurants and into Square for Retail on your register at any given time. And in regards to adding stock you are able to do that from either your computer or via Square for Retail and it will sync across our platforms.

someone replied to my email from [email protected] saying: "Unfortunately no you cannot run the retail on the register during the day and then sign out and sign back into the restaurant POS on the register at night."

So now i'm really confused. Any advice would be super helpful. We are trying to open up for evening hours this Friday.

They might've confused your questions/request because you may log out of the register and you will be prompted to select which application you would like to use. Which in your case will be Restaurants or Retail.
