Forced into Square Plus

We chose Square deliberately, bought its hardware, and built our business around it, and now Square is forcing us onto a plan 70% more expensive for features we'll never use.

Here's what makes this feel like a bait-and-switch rather than a routine price change:

When we signed up, we evaluated Square carefully and chose a specific plan — Square Appointments Plus, at $29/mo — because its features and price were exactly what our business needed. On that basis we bought Square hardware and built our day-to-day operations around Square's software. Those were real, committed investments made in reliance on the plan Square offered us.

Now Square is unilaterally moving us to Square Plus at $49/mo. For us that's a straight ~70% increase, and the added features (retail, restaurants, marketing, and so on) are things we have no intention of using. We didn't enter into business with Square with this plan in mind. They're changing the deal after we're already invested and can't easily walk away.

• Square's Jan 21 email offered an opt-out to keep our existing plan. We used it, and it was honored: on Feb 21 we correctly stayed on Appointments Plus.
• This month a new email arrived: "Previously, you had the option to stay on your current plan. Square Plus will now replace the plan(s) to which you are currently subscribed... No action is required." Auto-switch on Oct 11. This time there's no opt-out at all.
• The email markets this as "$200+/mo down to $49," but that same table lists our actual plan, Appointments Plus, at $29. So the real change for us is $29 up to $49 — not a discount.
• When I contacted support, I was told it can't be reversed, it's a corporate decision no one can reach, and — despite a screenshot of the original opt-out — that it looked like we "hadn't opted out" (it turns out this was just a pre-written response; they didn't even have our account open).

Our ask is simple: honor the plan we chose and built around, and keep our account on Square Appointments Plus.

If you also chose Square for a specific plan, invested in hardware and setup around it, and are now being force-migrated to a pricier plan you didn't sign up for, reply with your story.

Agreed. This forced upgrade is motivating me toward having claude build a dupe of square appointments and offer it for free.

edit: i’m about 2/3rds done with it and am waiting on approval to send text messages from my voip provider.

Haha, that is exactly the way I was thinking too, but I want to give Square a chance to fix this.

Anyone tried Vagaro? I'm a solo practitioner and don't need all these useless "new" features. It's $24 and you get a slick card reader with a built in screen for free. Really tempted to convert but wanted to see if anyone has any experience or is planning to do the same.
