No more pennies for cash sales

No more pennies for cash sales

I want to stop using pennies in my Square POS over-the-counter sales.  This is due to the new national policy to stop minting pennies.  I could set my prices to the nearest nickel, dime, or quarter, (which I have done before) but when %discounts are taken into account, there will always be some cash sales that will need pennies for change.  We are not going to stop offering % discounts for various good reasons.  I want Square Register to have an option to round the change to the nearest nickel, since pennies are going 'obsolete' in the US.   My employees could theoretically do this manually, except for 2 reasons:  the numbers won't add up at the end of the day (the register count will always be 'off'), and also that you would be surprised how many young people can't do simple math, or perform simple concepts like 'rounding'.    Currently, when I apply a percentage discount, the SquareUp POS must already round to the closest penny.  That's just math.  If they can round to the nearest penny, then it can be made to round to the nearest nickel also.

This is a top priority fix for us, Square.  It's hitting banks and credit unions all over the U.S.A.  The story is starting in the newspapers as well, https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2025/10/23/penny-shortages-kwik-trip-home-depot[Redacted]7/ .  The last pennies were made in August, so banks will not be getting rolls of new pennies ever again.  The only pennies are those in circulation, and those will stop circulating soon without the influx of new pennies to allow for businesses to provide exact change.  I know I hardly ever receive pennies in, they are only going out, so without being able to get rolls from banks there are no pennies in my drawer.  Please provide this update, asap.

Just got off chat with Square Support regarding this issue (again) and was told (again) this is not available (nor does it sound even close). Like you all, my bank informed me today that pennies are no longer available so I need a fix within the next dollar's worth. The chat agent suggested a line item for rounding but here's my dumb question - I want to round down vs up so would enter as a discount. And every discount is going to affect the taxable total... See where I'm going? Maybe easier just to add a round up as a non-taxable item but will that fly with the tax authorities (we have to separate out on our monthly returns)?

Really, really sad we have to scramble to figure this out vs a solution from Square who just rolled out a "Premium" pricing tier today.

Yeah, I'm not going to deal with various tax implications because they can't program something that is already a requirement in other countries (ie. Canada) and should be fairly straightforward to program for US.

I'll just find another vendor to use for my payments starting in 2026 if I have to.

I reached out to our "account rep" last week and this is his response from the product team: "at this time, our platform does not support that capability and it is not listed on our roadmap"

My concern is what is going to happen with some of the other potential changes like, no sales tax on tip?

Has anyone looked at some of the other POS alternatives and have any recommendations. I've got quite a bit invested in our Square environment but it could get a bit too cumbersome to continue if they aren't going to provide things being required of us, as business owners.

Am I incorrect in understanding that Square systems in Canada already do this? Hoping that Square can please look at adding this feature. @SVLFever suggestion seems like other POS's have figure this out already.

Same here. Bank is limiting the pennies they'll let us buy. Need this round up/down feature very soon.

This is most assuredly already something Square has enabled for Canada users. It should not be something we have to beg for on the US side.

Yeah, that makes no sense really.  It should be an option in the US for those that don't want to deal with pennies (I.e. a bar).   My old POS had this functionality for all 18 years I used it.  This is not a new concept, and if it's available in other countries, why isn't it available here???

We would like to request this feature as well.

Already a thing in Canada
