Display New Client Indicator on Square Appointments App & Register

Square already has the ability to identify new clients on the Dashboard calendar, but this feature isn’t available on the Square Appointments mobile app or Square Register.

As a salon owner, this is incredibly frustrating. Our front desk team uses the Register and mobile app daily, not the Dashboard.

Knowing when someone is a first-time client is essential for providing a great customer experience. We prepare welcome gifts, explain first-visit benefits, and make sure new guests receive extra attention.

We should be able to see a simple “NEW CLIENT” badge or star directly on appointments across all devices, without having to open individual client profiles or use a computer.

Since Square already tracks this information, please make the existing New Client indicator available on the Appointments app and Square Register as well. This would be extremely helpful for salons and other appointment-based businesses.

This is an incredibly valid point. Front desk teams and stylers depend heavily on speed, and navigating into individual profiles just to verify if someone is a first-time guest can stall the onboarding flow or cause missed opportunities for special treatments.
Currently, the "New Client" calendar indicator icon is only visible on the Square Dashboard calendar. It does not display natively on the calendar screens of the Square Appointments mobile app or the Square Register. On mobile and Register hardware, calendar icons are currently limited to basic statuses like transaction checkouts or staff assignments. [1]
While we continue to push this product feedback to our development teams, here are the most efficient workarounds used by top salons to flag new clients directly from mobile apps and Register:

Workaround 1: Use Emoji Prefixes in Client First Names (Most Visual)
Because the client's name is the most prominent element displayed on the appointment calendar slot across all hardware devices, adding a visual anchor directly to their name works flawlessly.
  • How it works: When your front desk manually creates a client profile or accepts a pending online booking request from a new guest, append an emoji—like a star (⭐) or a sparkle (✨)—right before or after their first name (e.g., "✨ Sarah").
  • Why it helps: The emoji will instantly render directly on the calendar block across the Square Appointments app and Square Register, flagging the front desk staff immediately without requiring a single tap.

Workaround 2: Require Custom Intake Forms for Online Bookings
If the majority of your clients book online, you can automate how new clients flag themselves.
  1. Go to your Square Appointments Dashboard > Settings > Online Booking > Information Collect.
  2. Create a custom field or question like "Is this your first time visiting us?" or "How did you hear about us?"
  3. Why it helps: When an appointment is requested, the answer will populate in the appointment details. While you still have to tap the appointment block to read it, it prevents your team from needing to cross-reference past visit histories in the separate Customer Directory.

Workaround 3: Utilize Appointment Notes for Quick Reference
When confirming or reviewing online bookings on the fly, have the booking manager type "NEW"or "WELCOME GIFT" directly into the Appointment Notes section rather than the customer profile. On the Square Register and App calendars, tapping an appointment block reveals the appointment notes instantly, allowing the front desk to scan the greeting instructions without digging deeper into full customer history.
