Cash Rounding

People have been asking for the ability to round up hundreds of times, and Square indicates they can't do it, but in Canada, they got rid of the Penny years ago, and Square has a Cash Rounding feature already built into doing this.

It makes no sense that you can't add a feature to the US version allowing a business to round up or down cash sales automatically. Ideally, you could have user-selectable options for rounding - up only or up or down - plus amount to round to 0.05 or 0.10 or 0.25 or $1 rounding. Then, please create an account where this money could be tracked so users could apply it to a charity or an employee fund.

At the very least, let customers in the US turn on the Cash Rounding feature you've already built for Canada.

See this recent article on the Penny - if Square were to make a big announcement about getting rid of the penny, it might move the issue forward. Having my staff have to deal with pennies is a waste of time - please help us get rid of them.

I want to stop using pennies in my Square POS over-the-counter sales.  This is due to the new national policy to stop minting pennies.  I could set my prices to the nearest nickel, dime, or quarter, (which I have done before) but when %discounts are taken into account, there will always be some cash sales that will need pennies for change.  We are not going to stop offering % discounts for various good reasons.  I want Square Register to have an option to round the change to the nearest nickel, since pennies are going 'obsolete' in the US.   My employees could theoretically do this manually, except for 2 reasons:  the numbers won't add up at the end of the day (the register count will always be 'off'), and also that you would be surprised how many young people can't do simple math, or perform simple concepts like 'rounding'.    Currently, when I apply a percentage discount, the SquareUp POS must already round to the closest penny.  That's just math.  If they can round to the nearest penny, then it can be made to round to the nearest nickel also.

My previous POS had the ability to set the rounding to;

• The higher x coin (nickel dime, quarter)
• The lower x coin (nickel, dime, quarter)
• The nearest x coin (nickel, dime, quarter)

It would add a line item called "rounding".  Some transactions it would be +/- $.02 or $.01, as I would round to the nearest nickel.   I ran it for 17 years that way prior to converting to Square and only one customer out of the hundreds of thousands we had ever quetsioned it (and that is because it was part of a community outreach program teaching a person how to interact financially in society).

This function was critical because some of our items would want to ring up at $x.01, which is a real PITA when working in a bar situation.  

Having this function would help improve operations for those that want to activate it.

I would like to bring attention to this post now that the US has officially announced the retirement of the penny. This feature needs to be added ASAP. It will take time for the penny to phase out completely, but with how slowly (if ever) Square adds feature requests made in this community, y'all better get started now.

This would be extremely helpful as we are looking to phase out pennies. i would like the ability to round tho the nearest nickel for cash and credit card sales. we don't know if they will be paying cash or card at the time we show/tell them the total, so id hate to say "that will be $ 13.23......oh your paying cash? that's 13.25 then....." we will need this feature soon!!

Everyone who runs a cash business wants this. I have been with square for too long to expect any useful changes, but just know, everyone wants this.

It makes sense that cash rounding would be particularly helpful with the retirement of the penny (as @FernHouse mentioned). I spoke with our Product team about this idea and while it is not in development now, it's something we will revisit in the future. I'm surprised your product team returned to you with "it is not in development now," as it's already a feature in Canada, since they got rid of the penny years ago. All they have to do is make the feature available in the US.

I chatted with Square Support today and they informed me that Cash Rounding (to eliminate pennyn usage) can be accomplished by utilizing Modes under Device Management.  The steps they provided were not straightforward and I am still scratching my head.

Has anyone out there figured this out?
