Cash Rounding

People have been asking for the ability to round up hundreds of times, and Square indicates they can't do it, but in Canada, they got rid of the Penny years ago, and Square has a Cash Rounding feature already built into doing this.

It makes no sense that you can't add a feature to the US version allowing a business to round up or down cash sales automatically. Ideally, you could have user-selectable options for rounding - up only or up or down - plus amount to round to 0.05 or 0.10 or 0.25 or $1 rounding. Then, please create an account where this money could be tracked so users could apply it to a charity or an employee fund.

At the very least, let customers in the US turn on the Cash Rounding feature you've already built for Canada.

See this recent article on the Penny - if Square were to make a big announcement about getting rid of the penny, it might move the issue forward. Having my staff have to deal with pennies is a waste of time - please help us get rid of them.

Yeah, that makes no sense really.  It should be an option in the US for those that don't want to deal with pennies (I.e. a bar).   My old POS had this functionality for all 18 years I used it.  This is not a new concept, and if it's available in other countries, why isn't it available here???

Definitely need the same ability in the USA version that is available in Canada already since it’s the government that has decided to no longer produce pennies

What I'm planning to do is set tax to be inclusive. So instead of something being $9.99 plus tax, it will be $11.00 even and square will handle whatever the price needs to be to make it $11.00 with tax. 

Not the best solution but it should work for me. Square really should make this issue a priority.

I can't speak to the internal goings on, but the API beta release on 10-16-25 does include a rounding object

Now, that being said, this is already a thing in Canada since early 2012-2013.  Square does function this way in Canada, HOWEVER, here in the US we seem to be missing any guidance on how rounding is expected to be done. Customary would be to round up and down based on the nearest nickel, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, etc.  But alot of businesses just want to round up to the nearest nickel (Chipotle here is looking at you).

THE REAL PROBLEM: is there are states and localities that have laws on the books requiring exact change, charging advertised prices, etc.  There is a law pending or similar called the "Common Cents Act", nice and clever.

So I am sure the real problem is not the technical one here as much as it is the legal one.  I am not saying blame the government, but blame the government for creating this without the exact advice.

So I say don't fear, it will get fixed, and I think soon if we can ever get the government back open.

I'm adding my experience here as well. Both of my local banks I deal with have informed me that in the very near future, they will have no pennies for me to purchase. I would very much like Square to have the ability to round up/down to the nearest nickel.

Discovered an interesting fact here in California. It’s actually illegal to round up and charge the customers more money than the total shown. That means that we will always have to round down to the nearest nickel and eat the difference on every transaction. To make it worse that also means that we will have to eat the difference on the sales tax so it’s a double hit on every transaction

We need this.  I've seen examples of the Canada version and that would work fine for the US.  An option to enable or disable would get around the legal issues in different areas.  Let the end user take the responsibility to turn it on or not.  If I wanted my cashiers to do math on their own or I didn't care of accurate cash drawers I wouldn't use a POS system in the first place.

@homeprogreen I have heard of this being in the case in multiple states. As far as I know, it's not a problem where I live as long as I provide disclosure to the customer that I'm doing the rounding. You are correct though that it is a double hit when you're having to eat the rounding down and the sales tax. A better solution might be if Square would allow you to put in the "Post sales tax" price and let it figure the taxes in reverse. My old POS system let me do this. Square is somewhat limited in this respect because you cannot have more than 2 decimal places of precision in a price thereby making this almost impossible. 

@jhildenburg I agree. They should just let it be an option, perhaps even with the option to always round down.
