Adding auto service fee for Online orders

Adding auto service fee for Online orders

Hi Developer Team,

Can you please let us apply service fees automatically on Online orders? It will be extremely helpful and I believe all your Australian customers will dearly love this function.

Hi @TheB0ss,

Currently, we don't have a specific feature for charging additional fees on online pickup orders. As a workaround, you might consider creating separate menu items specifically for pickup orders that include the additional packaging fee in their pricing.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help here. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

Hey everyone,

I’ve been chatting with Square support because I’m thinking about building my online ordering website through Square. I really like the idea of using their loyalty program to help grow the business—even for online customers.

But I ran into a bit of an issue: it seems I can’t pass the card surcharge to customers on online orders. That’s a tough one for me—especially since I’ll need to upgrade my Square subscription and cover the processing fees myself. It doesn’t feel fair that customers who order in-store pay the surcharge, while those who order online don’t.

Has anyone else run into this? Would love to hear how others are handling this!

Thanks

Hey @ANDREROMANO

Thanks for reaching out!

The ability to automatically apply surcharges to Square Online orders is a popular feature request that we've been continuing to track feedback for on this thread. I've gone ahead and moved your post here, so we can be sure you’ll receive an update.

In the meantime, you could consider adjusting the online sale prices for your items to account for the estimated surcharge, based on your average order size. This way, your in-person and online prices can vary slightly. Appreciate this approach isn't as seamless as an automatic surcharge, it is an option available for the time being.

If you have any other questions, please let us know. 😊

Hey @Katie_SQ, thank you for your reply.

When I was talking to the support, they mentioned to me I couldn't have different prices for the same item as Online and In-store. Do you know if I can increase the prices only for online orders?

Thank you.

Sorry @Katie_SQ , I just saw your previous msg saying that we need to create separated Items. Thank you.

Hey @ANDREROMANO! You can set separate prices for in-person and online on the same item.

To do so, please the steps below:

  1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and go to Items & orders > Items > Item library.
  2. Select an existing item.
  3. Under Variations, go to Price and click Options > Add online sale price.
  4. Enter an online sale price for each variation you want to update.
  5. Click Save when finished.

Here's how it looks on the Square Dashboard:

If you have multiple variations on an item, the online sale price field may look like this:

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions. 😊

Hi,

I have tried to set up a 2.2 surcharge  and also as a Sale Tax amount. This is being applied when using the POS app but not on the online store.  I still have the GST Sales Tax entry but have disabled that and added a new one.  Any ideas 😁

Hi @cattsit! Thanks for reaching out about this.

Currently, Square doesn’t support automatic surcharges on online orders, so I've moved your post over to this existing thread where we continue to track this request.

As for online sales taxes, when your default GST sales tax is enabled, GST will automatically apply to orders placed through your online store. No other sales taxes are applied automatically online.

If you permanently deleted your default GST sales tax and created a new one, please let me know, as our Engineers will need to adjust your online GST settings on their end. Otherwise, simply re-enable the existing GST tax to ensure it applies to your online orders.

Let me know if you have any questions. 😊

Thanks @Katie_SQ , we still have our GST entry.  Thanks for the explanation.

Hey @Katie_SQ

Thanks for your previous reply!

I’ve updated the Online Sale price to include the surcharge, as you suggested. However, it's showing as a discount on the website—which doesn’t make sense since the final price is actually higher than the original.

This also creates confusion for customers ordering from the tables, as the prices appear more expensive than what’s listed on our in-store menu.

We’re really looking forward to the upcoming update that will allow the surcharge to be added at checkout, just like it works on the POS system.

Thanks again for your support.

Cheers,
Andre
