Will customers earn rewards on purchases made using a gift card?

I've been trying to get in touch with Square customer service but it is so awful and complicated.

Can anyone help answer these pretty simple questions?

Will customers earn loyalty points when paying with a gift card?

Will they earn points when buying a gift card?

Is there a way to exempt point earnings when paying with a gift card?

@rachaelrenew as I recall it depends on how you have it set up. We have ours set up from years ago when there were less options. Based on the amount spent, no matter the item purchased they earn a loyalty point. As long as they pass that minimum $ threshold they earn one point. There are many ways to set it up; they could earn multiple points based on items or total spend, they could earn based on specific items and yes items can be excluded from loyalty accural.

Here is an article that might help. https://squareup.com/help/us/en/article/6462-square-loyalty-faqs

I’m more concerned with customers earning points when buying a gift card and then more points when that same gift card is redeemed

Thanks I’ve gone through almost all the support info on this… I can’t find a way to exclude egift cards. Or an option to prevent the accrual of points when PAYING with a gift card

You should be able to exclude the purchase of gift cards from loyalty points accural if you use the correct settings. I want to say the 'visit' type? Anyway, I believe that article will get you started; happy to provide additional feedback once you get into your settings and work through the best way for your program.

I see you've mentioned that @Anthem's suggestion did not resolve this issue. I'd be happy to reach out to our Loyalty Support Team on yourbehalf to find the answer for you 🙂

I'll be right back with what I find out from them! Thank you for your patience in the meantime.

Hey again @rachaelrenew,  I'm back with an update from our Loyalty Team! Here's what they've let me know:

"Gift Cards shouldn't earn in the first place. Gift card purchases are excluded from earning points as a general rule with Square Loyalty. The only thing that may affect this is if the Seller is not selling Square Gift Cards

If the Seller is selling a third-party gift card, the Seller would just need to change the rule for how points are earned. All of the items in their Item Library would need to be assigned a Category, then within the Loyalty settings, the Seller can select all the Categories they would like customers to earn points on."

If you are using third-party gift cards, please let me know and I can provide further details on how to update those settings. I hope this information is helpful but please do let me know if you have any additional questions 😊
