Payment options using the website

I'm trying to envisage several ordering and payment options and would like your opinions on what will or will not work:

1. The customer is at home orders using the web store that I have created. They pay for delivery and enter their credit card info. We receive the order and you take 1.9% (assuming UK based) of the total order. Correct?

2. The customer is at home and orders using the web store that I have created. They click on the 'collect from shop' button (or whatever it is - not tested that yet) and will not get charged for delivery. They then walk into the shop sometime later and pick up their goods. Is this an OK option?

3. The customer walks into the shop and wants to buy things. The shop assistant fills out the order using my web store from their PC. We now have 3 payment options:

    a) A Square reader is linked to a tablet. Payment is taken using that. How can that payment be linked to the order that was created on the PC so the order can be fulfilled (and stock updated)? Or can a Square card reader be linked to a PC (which would be good)?

     b) The customer wants to pay cash. How can the order be fulfilled so that stock can be updated?

     c) The customer has a credit card and uses it to pay from the web store order as though they were sitting at home (same as number 2 above). - is this realistic? Probably not as they would need to be touching the shop PC. So, we encourage them to use the Square reader - and then we need to answer to question 3a).

Am I thinking the right way here? Can anyone answer some or all of the above questions?

Cheers

Alan

You need to create the order on the square POS app, not the web store. This way the payment is taken via that where you select the items, you can also acknowledge cash payments this way and it automatically will update stock! Hope this helps 🙂

Hi @alansh, thank you for your post! I'll do my best to answer all your questions below. It might be a bit long so bear with me!

1. That is correct. If the customer is using an European card (which included a UK card), the transaction fee will be 1.9%.

2. For collection or pickup, the customer won't have to pay for delivery but the purchase will still be completed online so the 1.9% transaction fee will still apply here. They will either be assign a slot to pickup their orders or, if you allow schedule pickup, can select a slot themselves. They will then be able to come and collect the item at the store.

3a. The Square reader is not compatible with a PC. The best thing to do here would be to download the Square Point of Sale app onto a tablet or mobile device and process the payments that way rather than through your website. Payments taken through the app will update the stocks accordingly since it'll use the same item library as your site. The fees for payments accepted with the card reader is also 1.75% compare to 1.9% for online payments.

3b. If the customer would like to pay cash, you can simply record this transaction either through your Square Dashboard or through your Square Point of Sale app. These transactions will still generate a receipt and deduct the items from stocks. There isn't a way to record cash payments via the web store at the moment.

3c. They can do this simply by going to the web store themselves and completing the order that way. In this case, they can choose to pick the item up in store rather than delivery. Or you can generate a checkout link for that particular item from the Square Point of Sale app; customers will then be able to either scan a QR code to pay, or you can send the link to them via text message.

Let me know if you have any other question and I'll be happy to help!

1. Great - happy with that.

2. Is there some option at checkout that gives the customer a choice to pick up the items? I haven't yet assigned the payment processor so I can't test this out yet.

3a) How do you link the Square card reader and app to the order that someone just made? Is there a unique order number you enter into the Square app or something else?

3b) Same applies if the customer pays cash. How do we reconcile the amount paid in to an order?

3c) That seems OK as long as we can do the same as 3a).

This is looking more and more viable for us. Thank you for the responses so far.

Thanks Matt - but that is not the issue. It's linking the payment taken using the reader to the order placed using the Web store I created so that the order can be marked 'fulfilled' and the stock reduced.

In store you sell through square POS app rather than the web and then the reader takes the payment and the order is automatically fulfilled and stock  reduced

Ok. Does the SquarePoS app link to my web site then?

Sorry if these questions sound really basic, but I have spent days getting the look and feel right on the web store and I don't want the PoS app to just present a list of 300+ items to sell.

The app will link to your account where your items are added

The site can still be used by the customer but when you’re selling face to face you will be able to select the item the customer is purchasing on the app and use this to connect to the reader

Matt, I understand that and it's good - but only if I can select using catagories to reduce the options. If I have to scroll through 300+ items, all vaguely similar, to find the one badge the customer wants to buy, then it's a non-starter.

Does that make sense?

you can search for the product they’re looking for 🙂 as far as I know this is also the only way to use the square reader

Hi @alansh, asides from search for items like Matt suggests, if you have an iPad or a Samsung tablet, you can use the Item Grid feature to arrange your categories so it'll be easier to search for and select items.

If you are using a mobile phone, you can opt into the Square Point of Sale Redesign Public Beta which will give you the option to have Item Grid on your mobile like so.

I shall try this on my iPad - I assume I don't need the card reader to install the app.

Yes, I think I can make that work OK. It can see my catagories and the badges within. I might need to rename one or two to make it a little clearer - but that's no big deal.

Thanks

Alan

And I've just tested paying cash from the app and it does reduce the main stock.

It's all looking very good so far.
