Using a barcode scanner for items in square appointments

Using a barcode scanner for items in square appointments

Hello, we use Square appointments in our Pet store for our grooming, but sometimes our grooming customers have products like dog food while picking up their dog from grooming,  I need the ability to charge them for the dog food along with their grooming through square appointments. Below the add a service box, is add an item, this is a great feature to include the dog food with the grooming. The only problem is, it must be searched for manually, that is crazy, we have a barcode scanner. We need to be able to use the barcode scanner to add an item and not search for it manually. I have already lost one customer due to this, it is an easy fix.

Please help thank you, Brigantine, Bill.

I found this article where someone had a similar problem.  I hope this helps you and that it’s similar to what you need.  I include the link below 🙂

Thank you Stacelyn24, it is close but that does not fit our issue, we want to use the barcode scanner to Scan items when our client checks out, currently when we scan the item it does not populate into the ad item category at checkout. Thank you.

Hello, @Brigantinebill -That’s an excellent feature request. We appreciate you sharing your business use case and why it would be valuable for you. Having the ability to create an item by scanning a barcode is available with Square for Retail, this may be the reason as to why you are not seeing the option on your end. You can find more information on how you can Create and Manage Items from the Retail POS App and Dashboard here in case you are interested in taking a look.

If any updates come available regarding your request we will make sure to reach out to you with more details.

Thank you for your feedback.

hey @sayra ! any updates here? or any reason as to why I see this on my demo account (APOS on iOS iPad):

@sayra and @Brigantinebill - I have confirmed that barcode scanners now do work with APOS (Appointments point of sale) 👍

I just tried to use the bar code scanner on the add an item line while making an appointment.... it did not work....

we have people that bring items to the check out counter when they pick up their dog from grooming. (square appointments)

we would like to have them pay at the grooming counter, instead of paying for the dog grooming (Square Appointments) and then walking all the way to the other end of the store to pay for an item they want to buy (square Resister).

why can't the bar code scanner work on the add an item line on the make an appointment screen...?

we have lost too many sales from this already....

@Brigantinebill What I have found out is that you need to buy a small printer that can create barcodes labels. when you add a product to your inventory make sure you generate a SKU for that item. the GTIN barcode will not work on (APOS). In order to use APOS and also be able to sell your products you need to print a barcode with the SKU number, either put it on the item or if you have a small inventory you can just have like a cheat sheet with the barcodes and just scan them. it works for me. We have a Day Spa and also sell skin care products and we found out that we have to create our own barcode with the SKU number which could be either your own or Square can generate one for you. I would recomend Phomemo D30 printer. Hope this helps

Could you just copy and paste the GTIN in the SKU field then?  I did that with some of my items that lost the leading zero.... I copied the GTIN and deleted the leading Zero....and other items I have Identical SKU and GTIN fields.....Less costly than buying a printer and labels.   ust saying this IF the SKU field is all the APOS sytem searches for.

Yes. You can also do that. As far as I know you can type all the numbers into the SKU field. I actually just tried in one of our products and it did work.

We fixed our issue by copying the SKU into the GTIN box. Worked!
