I'd like to suggest a new feature to be added so that an item can be ARCHIVED rather than totally deleted. This way, we can keep track of item details and pricing in case it comes back in stock.
I've passed on your feedback to our product team and we'll be sure to keep you updated here should this feature become available in future.
In the meantime, you can keep a record of out of stock items without deleting them completely by marking an item as sold out. This will keep the item in your library but you will see the 'sold out' messaging clearly when attempting to add these items to a sale.
Another option should you wish to delete these items completely, would be to export your item library. Should you need to update your item availability in future, you can use the import tool to quickly bring back those deleted items. At the same time, you can add new stock amounts and descriptions, in order to complete multiple tasks at once.

This would also be very handy. I like to have a record of previous items but it would be so much easier to maintain my product list if items I no longer stocked could be archived.

I agree with HelloBronte and urbanplantbouti. I would also find this feature very useful. Essentially I would like a function which would remove the item from the main items sales list without needing to delete it entirely. This will prevent unnecessary congestion on the main page, allowing me to locate the items I do have and can sell more easily.
I am surprised this has taken so long as it is an essential feature when using the Dashboard on a phone is logical basic functionality? We need ease of use people!
I'll add my vote for this feature, the idea of deleting data is always questionable. What happens to the reports for the previous years if you are deleting items? Archiving an item so that it is hidden from all but the Square dashboard would make it easier on the Online store and Terminals. Another added feature to archiving would be the automatic deletion of an item after a set period of time, 3 years as an example.
