Where do you find your best hires?

Hi! I just wrapped up with hiring for the season and I was curious how you guys do it.

I used to hire clients, then I would post on FB groups, but the best hires have been the recommendations from current staff members.

Where do you find your best hires?

We’ve had the BEST luck holding open interviews which is wild because they seem scary haha.

But it shows who wants to be there shows up!
We also have people fill out an online app too!

We just hired in 2 gals and we couldn’t be more excited.

Hiring is a constant with our business.   Like you, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the long game, especially with how our team is built and rebuilt over time.

Our industry is food service.  In that industry, turnover can feel like a revolving door. Most of our hires don’t view a smoothie juice bar as a long-term career, so we’re constantly looking for solid team members. One pattern we’ve noticed is that friends who work together tend to stick together — but that also means they often leave together.

Referrals have become our most successful hiring strategy. We use Homebase as our HR management system, which links to platforms like Indeed, Facebook, ZipRecruiter, and Craigslist. It helps us streamline everything — from posting jobs to tracking candidates — across all 10 of our locations. Managers can leave notes, give thumbs-ups, forward applications, and communicate directly with applicants through the system. Onboarding is smooth and centralized, which saves us a lot of time.

Let me know if you’d like a shorter version or more casual tone.

We haven't had to hire anyone new in over a year. Love our current staff.

But we do always have a google form at the bottom of our website for any applicants who want us to have their info on hand.

We have the setting on it to put all the responses into a CSV, which is nice for organization purposes.

I've tried posting on LinkedIn a couple times but we just kept getting applicants from outside the country, which was weird because I had the setting on to not do that. I don't know if they've fixed that in the last 2 years. It was really difficult to target the job posting to just our local area.

We run such a small crew anyway though that we never have to worry. There's always more applications than open spots. We have so many people trying to work for us that we basically have our pick from tons of quality people.

I'm not sure how, or what we do any differently than other business.

This all reminds me about Square's Teams "Onboarding". Does anyone have experience with that?

It's on my to-do list to set up.

We have a saying, "the shop wants who it wants" which I guess works when you run a metaphysical/witch shop LOL. We can't really publicize when we are hiring because there are a lot of people that want to work with us that we know arent' a great fit but we don't want to hurt their feelings as they are amazing customers- so fine line. What we do when people ask if we are hiring is we always say not right now, but will keep your resume on file. We do go back through the resumes when needs arise.

We use recommendations, generally works fine although it can have pitfalls if it doesn't work out.

A little late on the draw here, but my company StaffedUp just integrated with Square last month.  The employers who use us swear by us and as a restaurant owner myself, there's nothing on the market like it.  Especially for the price!

Are you using any softwares or tools now that work for you?  Either way, we make it super easy to create job posts, integrate with your website, push to job boards like Indeed, Zip, Glassdoor, etc, and help you hire fast.

Check it out in your square app marked or Staffedup.com, or simply reply here and I'll be more than happy to help you personally 🙂
