hide out of stock item

I can't believe square pos lacks this basic functionality.  You expect us to shuffle our product line instead of letting the computer work for us?  This request has been open for 2 years.  I am evaluating what to do with my new business and am wondering if I just use wiz or shopify when I add full ecommerce since your features come out so slow...

We use the weebly/square e-commerce system and are able to hide out-of-stock items... confused why you cannot?

Hey @hugheshomestead I agree with @DinaLRosenberg that you can hide out of stock items on your online store.

Online Dashboard -> Site Items -> Item Preferences

Click the Edit button next to Item Statuses and disable the "Display out of stock items on site" line

I am trying to do this on the phone app. Very basic square setup to accept credit cards. Put all my inventory in and I have to scroll through out of stock items when creating a transaction. 9 flavors of jelly in 3 sizes each, 20 are out of stock.

@hugheshomestead Aahhh, my apologies. I thought you were talking about your online store, which does have the ability to hide out of stock items.

You are correct that the point of sale does not have that ability at the moment. I recommend filling out a feature request over in the Ideate section of this community.

For the time being, if you only have the 9 flavors of jelly and three sizes, have you considered only having the nine flavors as items then make the sizes variations on the item?

For example, in my coffee shop I have four sizes of cups for my coffee. Instead of having each size of drink as its own item, I have the drink name then the sizes listed as variations. I tap the name then the size.

Variations can still have out of stock/sold out tracking (modifiers can not at this time) so you can still see all the sold out options when you tap on the jelly.

Yeah I have 9 flavors each with 3 sizes. I think this is what you mean. The flavors are seasonal. I just started and sold out of peach for example, peach harvest is in a couple months so logically I want to just keep it at zero stock until I restock.

If I delete it till September will sales history remain? I want to analyze popularity, maybe I’ll plant another tree or source fresh peaches …

If you delete the item your sales history will remain available to you. The other alternative you can do to remove the item from your library temporarily is to turn off its location from the web dashboard. If you set the item's location to "No Location" it won't show on your point of sale. This way you won't have to recreate the item when it comes back in stock, just update the location.

@ryanwanner provided a great workaround while the feature you're looking for isn't available.

Hiding out of stock items would make sense so the wrong item is not chosen, since you can still sell an "out of stock" item and go negative.

Hi, I'm seeing where people previously said that we DO have the ability to hide out of stock items from our square online stores, but I cannot find that function anywhere.  I tried following the instructions that folks posted above and the options y'all have mentioned just aren't there.  Can anyone please explain to me, if it IS actually possible to hide out of stock items, step by step how to do that?  Because when people go to my online store, all they see is out of stock items and I need to be able to change that (and not by doing it manually!)

...There is no link called "Item Preferences" anywhere on the "Site Items" page and I cannot find the "Display out of stock items on site" option anywhere.

@comingupviolets  Things got moved around since I posted this response. You can still hide out of stock items automatically. The new spot is:

Dashboard > Online > Shared Settings (possibly just Settings) > Item Preferences. Scroll down to the Stock Settings section and edit to disable out of stock items.
