Sell items Online with variable prices

Hello all,

I think I have written about this before but after searching for it, I cannot find the post.

We wish to sell online items that have variable prices. I hope I will be able to use item modifiers in order to create a workflow for the customer that ends with the final price the customer will pay, however, the starting point needs to be £0.

Currently, an online item cannot be priced at £0 and this is the problem. In the absence of a workaround, the solution would be to allow items with a £0 or "variable" price to be available and visible online. If the item price is "variable" then online it should be shown as "£-" or similar, and then as the modifiers are selected the price of the item updates.

Does anyone have any suggestions? The only thing I can think of is to make the item price a nominal amount but this is confusing for the customer as he can never purchase the item at that nominal price as he must always select a modifier.

Hi. The items in my online shop have zero cost with a mandatory modifier that updates the price.

Hey @nell_a, it should be possible to have an online item's price display as £0 and then have your customer choose a mandatory modifier in order to proceed to check out, as per @tonydow 's suggested example. 

When adding an item to your Square Online Overview Page, you can set the price at £0. Once your customers have chosen the desired modifiers for this item, the final price will be displayed on the item page. 

Unfortunately, there's currently no way to change how the price is displayed of an item if the price is variable. This would be considered a feature request. I'll make sure to pass it to our team for consideration. 

The best way would be to use the suggested above, and the price will then change as the modifiers are chosen.

Thank you @tonydow and @k_atie for your replies. Yes, I see now what you both mean and making the item £0 solves the problem for our website as the item now will be shown online - great. Unfortunately, it creates another problem elsewhere which is that the same item in Invoices is now showing at £0, however, we need it to be variable as the seller writes in a unique price when sold. I could try to use the same modifiers used on the website in the Invoices but there are some differences in how the product is modified in person compared to online and we need to adjust the price in the invoices according to these specific circumstances. It might be possible to adjust how we manage the sale in Invoices so we can get around this problem by using the modifiers but if not, we may need a long list of 'price adjustment' modfiers to cover all bases and I don't think this will be practical. Overall, it's too restrictive. 

The best solution for us would be able to, inside an Invoice, overwrite the price of fixed-priced items, including those priced at £0 as well as overwrite the prices of modifiers. This gives the seller the most flexibility and this is needed in fast-paced retail environment.

The fact that Invoices can't be saved at £0 is another restriction that we could do without and it would be good to see this changed so that we can save invoices at £0.

I've looked into it and we will need dozens if not hundreds of modifiers to cover all bases, so we would really benefit from being able to overwrite item prices and modifier prices too.

If we could make some variations of an item visible online and whilst others hidden that might help, but unfortunately that is not possible. So, that is another feature request.

You are able to make individual modifiers hidden on an item. When using the Invoices app, the modifiers do show and, if they are mandatory, you have to select one before the item can be added to the invoice.

I think I see what you mean, @nell_a . Although you do have access to the modifiers on invoices too. On the invoice in the screenshot above, you should be able to choose modifiers for a specific item by clicking Customize, as per the screenshot below, which will then add a price to the item on the invoice. 

As @tonydow mentioned, you are also able to hide certain modifiers on an item by using the tick boxes to hide individual options if they aren’t available for this specific item.

You can also add a Custom Amount in invoices but this will probably affect stock control if you use it
