Save Credit Cards for Open Tabs

Please, please add a feature to save credit cards for open tabs - it is your systems biggest disadvantage from others like Toast. For those of us running bars this is a nightmare to have to keep actual credit cards behind the bar when customers open a tab instead of just swiping the card and giving it right back to them.

Hi @akalous, thank you so much for writing and providing this feature request to the community. I understand the frustration from yourself and @Amanda_Bierock, and want to sincerely apologize for the lack of updates on our end thus far. You may have already heard that bar tabs pre-auth is now available (help article on how to setup here), but I wanted to make sure I circled back and commented here. We are working on updating some processes here in the Square Community that will make this section of the community more useful to our sellers and our Product team, so please keep providing product ideas! We really appreciate you.

@akalous There is an intermediate solution to this issue.  You can use open tabs with self serve QR ordering at your bar so that people can open a tab and add drinks/food as they want with only one authorization.  Here is the link:

@Donnie-MUnfortunately that does not work in our environment.

This has a huge thread in the seller community dating back to 2016 with over 63 pages...If you asked your Square for restaurants customers what the feature they'd like most, I'd bet money this is it.  Especially if it's a bar/ event based business. 

 

There is literally no other POS that doesn't have this feature- even Aloha which is so antiquated has this ability. 

 

Contactless ordering & creating customer profiles does not work in fast paced environments.  Additionally, we quit using contactless ordering due to the amount of chargebacks that are always resolved in the customers favor. 

 

Would love to see some movement on this feature!

Totally agree with @Amanda_Bierock above, I'm not sure why no progress since 2016 has been made on this feature. I work for a tech firm as my FT job (on top of owning my small business) and if our engineers/product team saw the feed on this, they'd have it solved in one sprint! @Ria there has to be a way to get this in front of someone on the product team who will actually take it seriously! Every other restaurant/bar system has this feature so it is not impossible.

This will be an amazing addition to the functionality for our bar.  We have to keep credit cards behind the bar and are unable to pre-auth cards to be sure we know they are valid. Then we have to continue to hold them and go through them to find the card at the time they want to cash out.  It's one of the biggest gaps vs other POS systems we looked at.

Please Please please - we've been asking for this feature since 2016 - it is standard so customers expect it and we either have to inconvenience them by keeping their card or risk walk-out - neither good options for our taproom.

We really need this feature. We are a very busy karaoke bar and sorting through our card file to find cards to close and give back to our customer takes up a lot of our time. We close all tabs left open at the end of the night with auto-grat   but then those people have to return to the bar the next day to retrieve their card. We open at 5PM so people are calling and emailing us all day before open about getting their cards back. As said before, many other systems offer this feature and I would say that it is the single biggest reason that we are even considering switching to another platform.
