Since square all ready collects sales tax, it would be helpful if they remit the amount collected to the state on my behalf. Etsy and other organizations do this all ready,
Etsy and Amazon etc have to collect and remit sales tax for you by law because they are "Marketplace facilitators" which is a specific type of business that Square isn't. Yes, it would be nice but I don't see that happening unless a law changes.
Payment processors and marketplaces are subject to different regulations.
When selling using Square Online, Square is considered a payment facilitator or payment processor and not a marketplace, so different regulations apply to Square and the independent businesses using Square to process payments vs. Etsy/Amazon and vendors using their websites to sell online.
At this time, tax compliance is the responsibility of the merchant and we do not guarantee the applicability or accuracy of our tax tools.
If you have any questions about your tax obligations, consider consulting a professional tax advisor.
