Label Printing: Scan and Print Barcode Labels

Label Printing: Scan and Print Barcode Labels

We are a retailer that has over 6,000 SKUs. We have asked for some time if there is an option that can be incorporated into the POS that would allow for us to "Scan and Print". With tons of new items coming in every week, we would love a better option to print out shelf labels, with the easiest option being to scan the new item and print immediately.

Re: Can Square generate SKU numbers?

Hello @GlacierLandings, welcome to the Seller Community!

This is a great question I'm sure other businesses have. While Square doesn't have a way to auto generate SKU's Shopventory does! Once your products are entered into Shopventory you can run a task where the software will generate a SKU for any item without an assigned SKU.

I hope this helps!

That's great, and all...for users of Square for Retail.  BUT, what about those of us loyal Square POS users???  Will this functionality be included in Point of Sale?  Or, is it already there, and I'm missing something?

Small business operating costs are high enought, without having to shell out an additional $60/month/register for the functionality that should be incorporated in both products.

When is Square going to put register on Andriod bases systems, or is this a Apple paid for exclusive rights to the register app? For us that do not use apple, is there a time frame if any for register to move to andriod based platform.

Thanks

What were the issues?

I'm new and starting from scratch.  I'll type the SKU # onto the inventory spreadsheet as I build the spreadsheet for my first download. Will the bar code reader read the typed in SKU that I downloaded as part of my spreadsheet or am I to scan the SKU/Bar Code Label into your system  -- scan to where?

First time I've done this.

Hey there @bbcms, sorry for the delayed response. We hear you! I wish I had more details or a timeline to share for Square for Retail on Android, but unfortunately, I don't. Just wanted to let you know we heard you and will be posting here in the Community when we have an update. Thank you for hanging in there!

Any comment from @username2 regarding my question about being able to print UPC/SKUs from Square POS????

Did you get any answers?  We are still trying to figure out how to get the scanner to read the barcode?   Did you put in your own information to develope the barcode, or use a third party....grrr this is so fustrating, thinking we should have used a different POS system.  Any insight would be reatly appreciated.

So...when will this feature be added to Square Point of Sale...for those of us LOYAL and revenue generating customers??  I would hope that this will be added, because for us small businesses, shelling out an additional $60/month/register for Square Retail for functionality that should already be included in POS, is unacceptable.

Hopefully someone at @Square will actually respond to this...because my previous posts have been ignored by @Square.

@FM Can you explain, or link to an explanation of, how to use Square and the DYMO 450 together? I can't seem to find step by step instructions. Do I create the items in square with a SKU first, then create a spreadsheet, and then somehow upload that to DYMO? Or do I need to have a spreadsheet first? Or create the items in the DYMO program first? How does the Square barcode scanner recognize the barcodes created in DYMO so that things ring up accurately? I'm lost about where to even begin here. I have a new store with thousands of inventory items and I'd like to have barcodes because that'll make checkout quicker... but I can't figure out how to make this happen. Thanks!!

Hi @radishpetaluma - We never got the Dymo to work with Square. We ended up using Avery 5195 labels in our laser printer (or you can do 8195 for inkjet). This has worked great for us. Make sure that every item in your Square inventory has a unique SKU. We started with 100001 and went up from there. The SKU is what Square turns into a barcode, and this gets printed on the labels, so that when you scan it with your barcode scanner, Square pulls up your item. As for getting everything numbered with a unique SKU, we did that in Excel. Export your Square database, it will have a SKU column, write the first two SKUs in (1000001, 1000002), and then select both boxes and do that bottom right corner drag/replicate thing through your entire database. It will auto-number your items. Going forward, if you are inputting items directly into Square, you will need to manually add the SKUs. Or when we are adding a bunch of inventory at one time, I export the product DB to Excel, add it all in there, then re-import. Hope that helps.
