Alex with Weebly gave me the "fix" for this issue for those of us who sell OOAK items in our online store. Basically, you'll have to edit each of your items You will need to go into each of your items and turn on stock tracking and input 1 for the amount. Then, when buyers purchase the item it will limit it to 1 and after the item is sold, it will be displayed as sold out. I tried it, and it DOES work!
The title of this post has been edited from the original: Why do items that recently read SOLD OUT now say OUT OF STOCK?
I am selling one of a kind art work, so I don't have more "stock" of the art. When it sells out, it's gone forever. I noticed recently that the items that used to be "Sold Out" now say "Out of Stock." Is there a way to change this back? And if not, I'd like to suggest that Weebly allows us to write whatever we want for "Out of Stock" items. (I would prefer it to simply say: SOLD.) Thanks.
As it stands right now, the text of these stock indicators is not customizable, @cydster.
When an item is out of stock, the indicator on your main website page will say Out of stock underneath the item:
If you have the Out of Stock badge setting toggled on in your Square Online Dashboard, your customers will additionally see Out of Stockbeneath the quantity selector when trying to make a selection on the item page:
It's currently not possible to edit the text to say anything other than Out of Stock. The red text and gray Out of stock badge will always appear when an item has inventory tracking on - but no stock. However, the Out of stock badge can be turned off under Online > Settings > Item settings.

Hi, I'm able to mark items as unavailable but then they are hidden. I sell artwork and want them to remain visible but with a SOLD caption or similar. Is this possible? I'm releasing 29 paintings tomorrow and 3 are pre-sold. Thanks for your help!
I would prefer my OOAK item say "SOLD" instead of "out of stock," which implies more stock may be coming. There doesn't seem to be a way to change the wording.
"out of stock" implies more stock may be coming. Why can't square update our options so we can mark something "sold?" I want it to stay on the site for a time, but I don't want people to think more stock is coming.
