Customize Modifier Set Order

Customize Modifier Set Order

Once I select an item, how do I reorder the sequence of modifier sets for that item?

Re: How to rearrange modifiers on Square for Restaurants

I'm sorry for this late reply @dv1!

You can create modifier sets from the Items section of your online Square Dashboard. There isn't a way to rearrange the orders of modifiers in a set, or rearrange the order of the set.

However, if you've set up required and non-required modifier for a specific item you will see in the Restaurants app that Non-required modifiers will be grouped first, with those modifiers listed alphabetically; and below you'll see Required modifiers and an alphabetize list of those modifiers. The video in this Support Center shows how modifiers appear in the app (3:35).

Can you reply here to let me know how being able to rearrange modifiers would help? Any examples you can provide will help our Restaurants team to make improvements!

Hello all!

I would like to share a simple work around for rearranging some of the modifiers on the POS app!

To preface this, it seem safe to assume Square is operating on ACSII for its sorting abilities. What dose that mean exactly? Well it means that there is a specific order in which the alphabet goes. And this is how we can sort of "hack" how our modifiers get arranged.

As we can see on these ACSII charts, some characters come before others. For example "#" comes before "A" which also comes before "~". So if we use these marks as the first letter of of modifier name, we can essentially control listed order of our modifiers on the POS.

As examples:

"> Right Half Toppings" will be the first listed on the POS...

"Add-ins" Will be second....

.... and "~ Master List" will be last to show.

As far as I can tell, this method still follows @Helen  instructions regarding required vs non-required sorting order. So tragically this method will not override that part. However, it will at least give some amount of control over how modifiers are displayed on the POS.

I hope this helps a few people! 😁

I really appreciate you taking the time to share this @SweetB! I've marked your post as the Best Answer to help other sellers to find this great workaround. From your other posts it sounds like you have a pizzeria?

@Helen Thanks for doing that! We own an Italian restaurant with both pizza and plated meals!

Oh I see! Well we're very glad to have your restaurant expertise and your experience here in the Seller Community. Looking forward to hearing your other tips and tricks! 🍕

When order tickets print from the online store, modifiers are sequenced in order that the customer enters them, not in a consistent order or the sequence that they're included on the item. This makes it very easy to make mistakes and overlook modifiers. Is there a way they can be sequenced the same on every ticket?

Unfortunately not - modifiers cannot be reorganized besides the way your customer selects them at checkout. @MeatsnFoods

and that’s not changeable in the code? it’s a real problem.

This is a bummer. I user my modifier for online store too. It becomes painful if I have to use ASCII to order my modifiers, as the online menu would look really bad.

I'll guess I'll stick to square retail until square for restaurants adds the basic functionality.

Yet another example of how Square is not in touch with their customer base. This is absolutely essential for a business that does any process oriented orders. If we use weebly for our on-line ordering interface, then the numbering workaround will show up when ordering. This is one of many deal breakers we have experienced with square over the years. How a hugely profitable company like square doesn't have the resources to improve their UI is lost on me. Time for a change.

This gets me super close, but there is one problem still with this solution and that is in item #2.

I have two modifiers for a chicken sandwich (modifiers for the sandwich and two side choices), and in my case, I put both of them as required to force them at the top. Ideally, the sandwich customization should appear directly beneath the sandwich, but that is not the case (which sucks). Here's my setup:

Chicken Sandwich

1. Heat Option (Required: 1, Maximum: 1)

2. Chicken Sandwich Modifier (Required: 1, Maximum: None)

3. Side Choice (Required: 1, Maximum 2)

Because the chicken sandwich modifier (#2) does not have a maximum modifier assigned, it loses priority on the PRINTED TICKET to the side choice. Even if I were to give it a maximum priority of 4, side choices would still become a priority because it goes from least to greatest.

Square for Restaurant Developers: PLEASE PLEASE modify the modifiers. Most restaurant software create a hard link between an entree and a side that then allows associated modifiers for each.

If anyone else is out there and coming across this thread, please chime in/like/anything because I have been told Square looks at these forums for improvements. Support calls where feature requests are made have no accountability and you will never find out if the request is acknowledged, considered, anything.
