An Automatic Gratuity / Tip button for Point of Sale app would be great, please

We add a mandatory 18% gratuity to all large parties in the restaurant, but there's no easy way to do this without getting out a calculator and doing the math (horror!) manually.

I tried creating a new "tax" of 18%, but it only half-works. On the plus side, it automatically calculates what 18% of the bill would be. But on the minus side, it's listed on the customer receipt as "tax," which is a deal-breaker.

For now, we define an item called "Gratuity" with an undefined price/percentage and then calculate it manually for every bill as described above. It's error-prone and time-consuming, both bad things. Surely Square Register is smart enough to figure out the tip on its own?

Re: Automatic tip for parties of 6+

@MR_Cltuch @Gam1 I just wanted to let you know that automatic gratuity based on the number of guests at a table is currently available with Square Restaurants. Square for Restaurants is a separate app to the Point of Sale app and it's free to try for 30 days. There's more information about automatic gratuity and other check management features with Square for Restaurants in our Support Center too!

OK, so what are these "multiple features and benefits" that will "help me run my restaurant better than Point of Sale ever could?" We sell a vegetarian bowl of goodness through a walkup window on a sidewalk. We have no indoor seating and only one employee working at any given time. You can liken us to a food cart without wheels.

We also cater, and that is where the auto gratuity button would come in handy.

With all do respect, please don't presume to sell your customers solutions to issues they don't have. Listen to the wants and needs of your base and respond accordingly. Simply add a line of code to the app and be done with it.

Another product, yay great solution for squareup

This reply was created from merging the thread "Can I set up tips to be automatically added?"

I wonder if I can set up tips to be automatically added to the receipts for party of 6 or more and still have option for customers to tip more if they want?

Hello @Thaliah

I went ahead and merged your thread since this question has been asked before. Currently this is a feature on Square for Restaurants, but it is not available on Square Point of Sale.

If you're using Point of Sale I recommend checking out Spensers reply on the first page of the thread. His work around has been successful for a few businesses. 🙂

if added as a tax how do you only select it for the bigger parties?

@GHI If you create multiple taxes (or a 'tax' as a workaround) you can toggle it on/off during a sale:

  1. From the Square app > tap check out > add an item to a sale.
  2. When you select the item to add scroll down to Taxes and toggle the tax rate on or off.

I too am upset that this small issue is not resolved. I ahve been with Square for 6+ years. I pay flat fee and that is why I use it. I could use various POS systems and pay a subscription service. We are using the main register and two iPad Minis to wait on customers with. The new system would be a fee of $140/mth plus a higher rate for the cards. I would have considered moving to the system but you would think for the monthly service fees we would get a reduced swipe rate.

@Helen I tried using adding a 15% "tax" as a workaround, but it posts as a sales tax, not as taxable income. Square POS and Square Payroll would need to communicate in order to untagle this accounting nightmare.

Is there any update on this subject without having to subscribe to the restaurant version and pay $60/month?

Hi @MMPCB - no update to share here. This feature is only available through out Restaurants software subscription. Like Helen suggested above, we do offer a free 30 day trial if you would like to give it a shot 👍
