where can the gift cards be redeemed?

When someone purchases a gift card do they redeem it only in my store or can they redeem it anywhere?

If you sell Square Gift cards thru your square register app they are only good at your store.

 Just like if you bought a gift card at McDonalds you can only use it at McDonalds not at Burger King.
