Using a Bar code scanner without square for retail

Can you use a bar code scanner without subscribing to Square for Retail? I’m currently using the free Square POS system and would like to implement a bar code scanner (to reduce human error during check out) without having to commit to the additional monthly fee of Square for Retail just to have the scanning capabilities. Is this possible? And if so, how do I set this up within the free POS?

If you are running square POS you can use a bar code scanner. If you are running square stand its as easy as plugging in a USB device.

I have the free version of Square for Retail.  I can't find the answer.  I've been using for almost a month now but there are still human errors so I'd like to get a barcode scanner.  All of my inventory is loaded using the distributor skus, no upcs.  So how would I go about associating items so the barcode scanner will identify the items?  I hope that makes sense, lol!
