Square hardware mutes my phone speaker

Hi everyone,

Can someone help us? We were at a fundraiser the other day, and when we plugged in the Square reader, it muted the speaker of the phone. We need the speaker unmuted because we use the phone's screen reader. Is there any way to hear the phone while using the reader?

No, when the reader is plugged into the headphone jack it is acting as a microphone and speaker.  If you were using the Bluetooth reader you could still use the speaker.

The reader doesn't have a speaker on it, does it?

If it does, how do we get it to output audio?

it doesn't have a speaker but the headphone jack is being used to transfer data via an encrypted audio link.  there isn't a way to use the speaker while the square is plugged in, just as if there were headphones plugged in.
