Keeping cards on file to charge later

For my business I need to collect a deposit, and then I need to collect the remaining due after the service is complete. My question is - if my customer saves their card information when they pay the deposit, can I later run their card after the date of service, or will I need to send them the final invoice?

@Danpsf When your customers choose to have their cards saved on file, you can use that card on file to accept payment for the remainder of what is owed! You can either use the card on file option if your client is face to face or you can pay out the remainder of an invoice.

Thank you! So when I need to charge this card again (assuming it’s the same one) I can just go in and charge it after the date of service? Do you know where that is located? I tried to find it but could not @nika

Yes that's correct @Danpsf! If you're using invoices, you'll want to click the drop down menu under Invoice Method. If your customer has a card on file, you'll see the option to charge the card that's saved.

If you're going to process a payment in person, you can follow these steps.

Hope this helps!

@nika Got it. I have a customer who paid their down payment and their card is on file. I can see where I can go in and charge them the remaining due, but there's a 3.5% + 15cent charge for "manually entered cards". Is this Square "dinging" me for this so I upgrade to their device so I don't get hit with these extra fees?

@nika As shown here. I'm not loving these charges. Is the only way around it to get one of their card readers? Screen Shot 2019-08-19 at 1.36.01 PM.png

@Danpsf - Not at all dinging! Sorry you feel that way. This post goes into detail about why the fee for manually entered transactions is higher than transactions that are swiped or inserted.
